Being of Russian decent, it was a great honour to work as a volunteer translator at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Being one of the Aussie-Russians I found the comments of ‘But you’re not a real Russian’ rather discouraging. However, having got to know me, most athletes and officials were impressed that someone born overseas could speak so well. The telling moment came when the Belorussian team invited me up for some celebratory drinks. I sat with the group and joined them in a shot of (what else?) vodka. I put down my glass and saw their gaping mouths… “You even drink like a Russian!” they chorused.
Being brought up by Russian parents and socialising with Russian friends, I couldn’t help but come to consider vodka as part of my heritage. But not any vodka, only the quality stuff. Stoly Limonnaya has long been a favourite of mine. It has all the kick of a good Russian vodka, but a fresh zesty lemon flavour to counter all that alcohol.
Regardless of what the latest trends may say – vodka on the rocks is not the proper way of drinking it. It was originally designed as a medication – something to be shot down quickly – not sipped as a recreation. Limonnaya is the perfect alternative for those that haven’t learnt to shoot properly – the cool lemon flavour is a great saviour for both the tongue and the throat. Even having learnt to shoot, Limonnaya is a sometime alternative to the harsher standard vodka shots. Milder in flavour taste and smell, while still incorporating the kick of a standard vodka, consider taking a bottle of Limonnaya to your next party and let the good times roll…
