Pros: tastes great, easy to prepare
Cons: high calories, high fat, high sodium
I occasionally purchase Stouffers French Bread Pizzas when they go on 50% off sale at my local store. This seems to happen every few months and I buy a few to keep frozen for quick dinners and sometimes for lunches too. When they go on the 50% off sale, I get a package of 2 pizzas for about $1.34.
Stouffers makes this frozen pizza in a number of different varieties. I have seen cheese, vegetable, pepperoni, pepperoni and sausage, and deluxe combination. Most recently, I purchased the pepperoni and sausage variety. It is made with 100% real cheese and includes sausage pieces and pepperoni as toppings. The best thing about this pizza, in my opinion, is the crispy French bread crust!!
Stouffers French Bread pizzas come in the well known red boxes. Each box is around 12 ounces (depending on variety) and contains 2 pizzas. Each pizza is individually sealed in plastic so that you can open the box and eat only one pizza and keep the other one frozen if you choose to.
These pizzas are not low calorie nor are they full of lots of vitamins or anything. Yet, as an occasional dinner, paired with a nice green salad perhaps, this is not a terrible choice.
One pepperoni and sausage pizza contains 460 calories. Of this, there are 24 grams of fat, 8 of which are saturated fat. This is more than the 30 percent of calories from fat that is usually recommended. It also contains 43 grams of carbohydrates, 4 grams of fiber, and 17 grams of protein. It also contains 880 milligrams of sodium which, again, is quite high, about 37% of the recommended daily allowance.
There are only a few vitamins and minerals in this product:
Vitamin A 10%
Vitamin C 4$
Okay, so these are not the most nutritious pizzas to eat nor are they low far nor low calorie. Yet, they do taste good!! The crunchy French Bread crust is very tasty, in my opinion. The sauce that is used is tangy and there is just the right amount. Some other types of pizzas that I have tried have way too much sauce on them and it oozes out and makes a mess or it just tastes overwhelming. This is not the case with Stouffers French Bread Pizzas.
These pizzas also contain a good amount of cheese. The cheese covers the whole top of the pizzas and melts into a fully covered pizza. The toppings are usually pretty abundant as well. There is a good amount of sausage, covering the top of the pizza with only small spaces between the pieces. There were about 4 slices of pepperonis on my pizza and each slice was cut into quarters and spread out to make it look like it covers the top of the pizza as well.
These pizzas seem to cook best in the oven, in my opinion. Ive tried the microwave approach and Ive even tried the toaster oven and they just do not taste quite right. When Ive used the microwave method, the crust is soggy, even if I put it in the oven to finish the cooking up. Thus, I do not recommend using the microwave method to cook these pizzas.
So, you should preheat the oven to 350F. Unwrap the pizza and put it onto a cookie sheet. I always spray the cookie sheet with cooking spray so that it doesnt stick because it has been my experience that they do stick, especially if the cheese melts off of the side of the pizza. The cooking spray alleviates this problem. Bake the pizza for 25-27 minutes. Pizza will be VERY HOT. I always let mine cool for 5 to 10 minutes before serving and they are always still quite warm but at least they dont burn my mouth.
Yes, I have experienced burnt mouth from these pizzas. That is why I highly recommend waiting until they cool down before eating. It really is easy to burn your mouth and it can be quite painful. These pizzas are tempting and its hard to wait but the wait is worth not burning your mouth.
I like to eat these pizzas occasionally. I will not pay full price for them so, as I said, I will buy a few when they go on sale. Its a good backup dinner when there isnt anything else in the house or if I do not have the time or energy to cook a full meal. I always serve these pizzas with a vegetable or salad though to help make it a little more nutritious of a meal.
My daughter likes the cheese variety and my husband likes the veggie variety while I will eat either cheese or pepperoni and sausage varieties. So, when I open these pizzas, I take them out of the box and use a marker to label the ones we are putting back into the freezer so I can easily tell which varieties I have put back into the freezer Thus, I have to buy two or three boxes of pizza for one meal (so everyone can get the variety they want) but then I have a second meal back in the freezer for another time.
I definitely will recommend this pizza as an occasional lunch or dinner. Do remember that it is high in calories and fat and also in sodium so that it is not something that should be eaten too frequently. Yet, as an occasional treat, I feel that it is too delicious to overlook!!
