Stove Top Stuffing Mix - the whole point of Thanksgiving!
Written: Dec 15 '07
Pros:Delicious, and so simple to make!
Cons:It's not a diet food, by any means.
The Bottom Line: Certainly not for every day, but as an occasional treat, this really satisfies my starch craving.
I'm a starch-junkie. I could make a meal out of rice, potatoes, corn, or stuffing. In fact, as far as I'm concerned, the whole purpose of Thanksgiving is the stuffing! But I'm also fairly lazy. So when it comes to stuffing, I make it the super-easy way. I use Stove Top.
And now it's even easier than ever! Now it comes in a large, 48 oz. box, with 6 envelopes. Each envelope has everything you need to make 8 servings of stuffing. Well, what they call 8 servings, anyway. (In my house, it's more like 4-6 servings). In the old days, you had two separate envelopes, one containing the bread crumbs, and the other contained the seasoning. Since you were supposed to mix all the stuff together anyway, I never understood why they needed to provide separate envelopes. I guess the folks at Kraft figured the same thing, and now everything you need is in one envelope. Easier for them to package, and easier for me to make!
In fact, making this stuff could not be any simpler. You can use the saucepan method, the even easier microwave method, the stuff-inside-the-bird method, or even a place-in-a-casserole-and-bake method. In any case, you want to combine the contents of the envelope with 2 cups of water and 5 tablespoons of butter or margarine. Then heat until it's hot, using any of those methods.
When I make it, I use a little more water (for softer stuffing), and less margarine (for fewer fat and calories). Sometimes I'll add some chicken broth, or some finely-chopped pieces of chicken. My husband likes his with some finely-chopped sausage.
Now matter how you choose to make it - plain or "dressy", Stove Top delivers a delicious, soft, moist stuffing. I absolutely love it. Especially when it's made inside the turkey, and can absorb all of those great turkey drippings.
I suppose that some people would consider it a "con" to have to make 8 servings at once. It's never a problem in my house. But note that you could open the envelope, and use only half of it, if you wanted to make less. If you do that, I suggest you vacuum-seal the remaining contents, or store them air-tight using some other method.
So what's inside that envelope? Well, basically, breadcrumbs, onions, celery and flavor. The ingredients also list "cooked chicken" and chicken broth. I have to admit, I don't see any chicken in here, so they must chop theirs REALLY finely! But do note that this is not a vegetarian stuffing mix.
Made according to the directions, a serving contains 160 calories, 7g of fat and 430mg of sodium. Like all things that I crave, this isn't exactly a "diet food". It's a good thing Thanksgiving only comes once a year! Actually, the truth is, I like to make this product whenever I'm cooking a whole chicken or turkey, which is a few times a year. So, I always buy this big box, and with 6 envelopes, it lasts me a long time.
When it comes to stuffing, in my house, it's Stove Top.
