I stay at the Strat every time I go to Vegas (usually twice a year) due to the fact we usually get our rooms comped our for a very cheap price, usually no more than $25 a night and we are not High Rollers by any means.
First off hotel is very far down the strip so you will either need car or take bus. As far as being in a shaky part of town the area around Las Vegas Blvd. which is by main entrance sure didn't seem threating to us and as far as rear of building being a bit seedy that may be true but I wouldn't know because I see no reason to go back there anyway. Check-in is in back of Casino which they all do and lines can be long at times but we just go gamble til they go down. Upon getting to elevator you will need key to show security so just anybody can't go up. We have stayed in regular king room and suite room. Regular room was clean, spacious, and had all things you need such as iron, coffee maker, safe, and blow dryer. The suite rooms have seperate living room with a jacuzzi in the tub.We don't use room service but there are plenty of places to eat from McDonalds to a really nice revolving restaurant at the top of tower. The buffet has been redone and to me is a nice deal at $6. The Viva Las Vegas show is a nice deal. There is also a mall on arcade level if you want to shop. The pool has been recently renovated and though not great much better than the old pool and still a decent place to get some sun.
The thing to remember about this hotel is their comp system is probably second to none and getting free food and rooms without being a high roller. Also for us the Casino is plenty big enough and the drink service is good.
In conclusion as long as you don't mind driving this place is a great place to stay. This hotel isn't on the level of the Mirage or Bellagio but I have stayed at Flamingo and Bally's and this place is on par with both for alot less. The way I feel if I'm going to lose my money in Vegas it's going to be eating and gambling not paying for a room I'm hardly ever in!
