When my family and I decided to visit Las Vegas we searched for a hotel with reasonable rates and fairly good reviews from the travel books we read (the Unofficial Guide to Las Vegas, etc.). The Stratosphere became our main choice due to the final analysis.
It is situated at the top of what is called the hotel and casino strip. So, that it is a very short walk to the other casinos in the area. The parking and check-in was somewhat slow but the attitude and helpfulness of the workers was pleasant. Our rooms were pretty decent though the decor had much to be desired. The amenities were basic as the rooms were clean and well-tended. The bathroom was spotless. The fixtures worked well and we had no problems with the water flow. We ordered room service twice and found that it took at least an hour for the delivery. Due to the enormity of the hotel's space it seemed to be average time.
The pool and lounge area is located on top of the main hotel. The main attraction of this location is the amazing view of Las Vegas. The pool was clean though it could have used more workers to help with keeping the pool area clean. At the time of our visit, the tower and it's restaurant had very long lines (way over an hour), so never went there even to see the view!
The casino is clean and well stocked with every game imaginable. Though it was packed, it was still easy to get a seat either at the craps table or slot machines. The slots machine seemed to be fairly well distributed in regards to different money values (.10, 25, so on). Waitresses came quickly with drinks compared to other casinos. Pretty decent drinks too! Customer service locations were fast and well-spaced through-out the casino.
The buffet was well stocked but limited in actual choices. The waiter and waitresses were friendly and pleasant. Dining area was clean and condiments readily available. Decor was actually much better than the rooms.
For children and their family, the Stratosphere has a huge shopping area on its second and third floors. Restaurants, gifts shops, clothing stores from brand names to local stores offer a change from the loud casino downstairs.
For it's price, the Stratosphere offers a good basic hotel stay though nothing great. With a little work, though, it could become a great hotel choice for the budget traveler in Vegas.
