| punk-7's Full Review: Street Skater for PlayStation 1 |
Street Sk8er 2 was a game I had been looking forward to for a long time, so I just had to rent it. It wasn't quite what I expected.
I'd like to stress that this is truly a poor skating game. It is, however, a wonderful video game. If you're looking for fun, this is the game. If you're looking for sk8ing, this is far more fantasy than reality.
Graphics: Graphics are good, nothing to be astounded at. They are good, not excellent though. One amazing part, though, is the movies. They are better quality than most T.V. programs, and are so clear it's amazing. With real footage and great music, the two movies are years ahead of their time.
Gameplay: An amazingly fun game, Street Sk8er is actually more fun than Tony Hawk. Keep in mind it is far from realistic, but I'll get to that in just a second. This game will keep you playing for hours. The best feature is the create your own park option, where you can make your own warehouse park, stocked full of funboxes, ramps, spines, rails, and walls. There are a lot of tools to use, but space is an issue. It would be a great improvement if they could just give you a little more room to make your park. The space given is sufficient, though.
Realism: Nope, none in this game. You can do anything in this game, and I even found myself pulling off a 1620. Considering a 900 was the holy grail of boarding, does a 1620 seem just a little impossible to you?
Sk8ers looking for realism will be annoyed by this, but the average person will find it amusing and fun.
Characters: These characters are good, not terrific. The all-around best is obviously Shannon, whom I would suggest.
Sound: The music E.A. chose for this game is great. with everything from Static-x and 8stop7 to Citizen King and a mix by the Deftones, what an amazing selection of music! You can't help but be pumped up by the music. The announcer, however, is the music's direct opposite. He's witty for the first 5 minutes, then you'll realize he's saying the same 3 things over and over. And over. Luckily you can turn him off.
In the game, you start out as a so-so skater, but can earn skill points to improve yourself. And unlike Tony Hawk and Thrasher, In SS2 you run a course which you must finish in time but also get sufficient points.
This is a great game for fun, but Do Not expect realism in any way from this game.
