Pros: Hometown newspaper, meant for people in Stuart and Martin County.
Cons: Reporters sometimes like to write before they have all the information.
The Bottom Line: The Stuart News is a newspaper, not a magazine. I do recommend it, since the only other alternative is The Palm Beach Post.

Back in 2000, I left my wonderful smog filled hometown in northern New Jersey and transplanted myself on the coast of the plywood state. AKA South Florida. Whats a girl to do thats new to a town? Well, for starters, how about getting the newspaper. I really had no choice though, since the school board does not send home bus schedules. They print it up in the newspaper 1 week before school starts. And that day happened to be the day I moved here.
Anyway, long story short. I grabbed a hold of The Stuart News just to see about the bus schedules. After I started reading the newspaper, I got all warm and fuzzy because it reminded me so much of my old newspaper back home, The Bergen Record.
The Stuart News was written for people like me. Easy to read articles, not to much focus on stocks and politics, the stuff I could care less about. It focuses mainly on Stuart, and when I was so new to this town, that is what I needed just to get a glimpse of what the heck kind of town I moved myself to. Today, I just read it for fun to see how much the reporters actually screwed things up, but thats for another paragraph. For a mere 35 cents a day and $1.00 on Sundays, I could sit down with a cup of coffee and read the newspaper after my children returned home with it. Yes, at the time I was too poor to do home delivery, so my little rugrats would have to go up the street and actually retrieve the newspaper for me from one of those kiosks that always get vandalized.
After a few years of reading the Stuart News, I cheated one day when the kiosk was out and purchased The Palm Beach Post instead. Well I might as well have picked a copy of the New York Times. The Palm Beach Post was nothing compared to my Stuart News. I felt like I needed a masters in English just to understand 1 article. And other than a short whats happening elsewhere article, it gave no news about my town or my county. I want articles short and sweet that get right to the point and talk about things in my town. Alas, I went back to the Stuart News.
If I had written this review 2 years ago, I would have highly recommended The Stuart News to anyone that was new or old to Stuart. Since they now have a website www.stuartnews.com, I no longer purchase the newspaper. Not to mention we get it for free at work thanks to the inmates. When comparing their online website to the actual hard copy of the newspaper, I would recommend the old fashioned newspaper everyday. If you want to know about an accident or why the police are barricading the house next door, then go to their website. They are pretty good about putting stuff up on their website in real-time. The sad part is, they aren't as quick to take it down. So because I95 was shut down 3 hours ago due to a gun toting madman, doesn't mean I95 is still shut down. The gun toting mad man was caught and brought to jail. You can read about it in the next days newspaper, but only online would you be able to read the actual arrest affidavit.
And to add to how the reporters screw things up, a few weeks ago, a woman went missing from her house. They had canine, helicopters, every available deputy and police officer out looking for her. This happened at around 9 pm. The next days newspaper gave a big old picture of this missing woman, with all the essential information needed when trying to locate a missing woman. The only problem was, the woman was found around midnight. Turns out she decided to go out for a walk and came home later on.
I understand the reporters could not retract their story before print time, but they never did print any kind of retraction in the following newspaper. So anyone picking up a hard copy of the newspaper, will always think this poor woman is missing.
Being in Law Enforcement, I deal with the Stuart News reporters almost daily. I look forward to seeing how much they can twist the factual information I have given them. But I consider myself biased when it comes to the crime stories in paper. I usually have to explain to my husband what really happened after he has read about it in the newspaper.
So overall, I am still partial to The Stuart News over the Palm Beach Post. I just do not read it like I used to mainly because I already know all about the crime and exactly why the gun toting madman did what he did long before a reporter even gets a whiff of it. But when I need to know things about our schools or what swamp developing is going to take place next, I can usually count on the Stuart News to tell me, either online or by newspaper.
