| mrssmoopy's Full Review: Sudafed Cold & Sinus |
I often find myself standing in the Health & Beauty aisle at my local supermarket trying to find something for sinus pain/pressure that could compare to the Tavist Sinus that I used to use (before the safety recall on the product for dangerous side effects). I stockpile cold, sinus, and pain relievers so when the incident occurs, I'm not running out to try to find something on sale, I'm already prepared. I browse the endless cold/sinus medications, but usually buy what's on sale to give it a try. This particular time, I picked up Sudafed Cold & Sinus.
*** NOTE: View the expiration date on the package before purchasing this product. Often I've found that stores have rotated the "soon to expire" stock to the front of the shelves, and if you are buying it for future use, just keep in mind that after it's expiration date the product dramatically increases it's ineffectiveness. So if you don't need it right now, buy something that possibly has a one year + expiration date!
Sudafed Cold & Sinus LiquiCaps (Non Drowsy)came in a 20 count box (unlike the photo Epinions has provided which only shows the 10 capsules). It was on sale for $3.99, and I had a $1.00 off coupon that doubled for $2.00 off, so how could I go wrong with a name brand cold/sinus remedy for $1.99? This product usually retails for $6.59 online, and $5.99 off-line. (I am a comparative shopper!)
WHAT IS IS USED FOR:
Sudafed Cold & Sinus states it gives "temporary
relief of nasal congestion, minor aches, pains, headache, muscular aches, sore throat, and fever due to the common cold. Temporarily relieves nasal congestion associated with sinusitis. Reduces swelling of nasal passages; shrinks swollen membranes. Promotes nasal and/or sinus drainage; temporarily relieves sinus congestion."
WHEN/WHY I USED THIS PRODUCT:
Sinus headache, post-nasal drip, and the complete blockage of my sinus area is an every season accurance for me. I inherited this condition from my Grandmother (GEE THANKS GRANDMOM!)
I recently used and discarded Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold & Sinus liqui gels because they were ineffective for me, so I rummaged through my cabinet and located this Sudafed Cold & Sinus product to aid in my time of discomfort.
WHAT IS IN IT?
Ingredients: (TAKEN FROM BOX FOR ACCURACY)
Active Ingredients: Each Liquid Cap Contains: Acetaminophen 325mg And Pseudoephedrine Hydrochloride 30mg. Inactive Ingredients: FD&C Blue No. 1, FD&C Red No. 40, Gelatin, Glycerin, Pharmaceutical Glaze, Polyethylene Glycol, Povidone, Purified Water, Sodium Acetate, Sorbitol Special, And Titanium Dioxide.
EASE OF USE/DURATION OF EFFECTIVENESS:
After reading the directions, I saw the adult dosage is 2 liquid caps every 4 to 6 hours until the symptoms disappear. (THERE ARE NO CHILD DOSAGES - CONSULT A DOCTOR FOR ANYONE UNDER 12 YEARS OLD). These liqui gels are large blue gels (remind me of horse pills or vitamin C gels), and may cause some to have discomfort when swallowing them. I didn't have any problems, and didn't feel that "pill stuck in your throat" sensation as I have encountered with other medications.
NOTE: I didn't realize I had to take two of the gel tablets EVERY FOUR TO SIX HOURS, or I would have passed this medication by. I prefer the longer lasting dosages because then I have to watch the clock to prevent my symptoms from reappearing. I personally overlap dosages by 15 minutes to continue the level of effectiveness.
Duration of use:
I took this medication for a three day period during the daytime. These liqui gels did seem to work quite quickly! Within a half an hour and I was nose breathing clearly. and the post-nasal drip was completely gone. I was actually as dry as a desert! My headache on the other hand was still there, but I usually require "stacking" a pain reliever on top of a cold/sinus medication anyhow. I get borderline migraine headaches with my sinusitis. I overlapped the dosages as indicated above, approximately every 5 hours and 45 minutes. I continued to feel relief from nasal congestion during this time!
SIDE EFFECTS/WARNINGS:
Side effects:
I experienced a "twinge" of dryness in the back of my throat. Kind of like that little tickle that you can't scratch (So I ate some hard pretzels!). I did also experience a slight amount of the sleepiness which I don't know whether it was the medication, or the loss of sleep due to being a mother of a four-year-old who sneaks into your bed in the middle of the night only to roll around and keep you awake. I must say that this particular Sudafed Cold & Sinus(non-drowsy) version worked better that original Sudafed because it didn't give me that "super spaced out" feeling, or knock me out for all day long naps. I felt a little tired, but that usually comes with a cold anyway.
Warnings:
The box states the following warnings: The box specifically states not to take more than 8 liqui gels in less than a 24 hour period. I was averaging 3 dosages per day so I had taken 6 pills. I only took these pills for 3 consecutive days before my discomfort passed without help from medication, but the BOX ALSO STATES do not to use for more than 10 days. If nervousness, dizziness, or sleeplessness occur, discontinue use and consult a doctor. Do not take this product for more than 10 days. If symptoms do not improve or are accompanied by fever that lasts for more than 3 days, or if new symptoms occur, consult a doctor. If sore throat is severe, persists for more than 2 days, is accompanied or followed by fever, headache, rash, nausea, or vomiting, consult a doctor promptly.
OVERALL IMPRESSION:
This medication worked for me by clearing my nasal passages, removing that "drip" feeling associated with post-nasal drainage, and offered some relief with my sinus headache. I started to feel human again!
I am not brand loyal to any product yet, but I feel that this over the counter medication does work, and worth paying full price for (even though that kills me to do that). I feel that with Sudafed Cold & Sinus Liqui Gels I get full effectiveness with only experiencing minimal side effects. You'll see it in my cabinet again!
