| mmcphee's Full Review: Sudafed Nasal Decongestant Chewable Tablets Childr... |
I figured that when nursery school ended for the year a few weeks ago, colds were going to be history for a few months anyway. Well, I was wrong. All three kids and I have had a head cold for the past week requiring me to stock up once again on Children's Sudafed Nasal Decongestant Chewables
The Basics
Childrens Sudafed Chewables comes in an orange flavored chewable tablet. They are in a blister pack for safety and require that a back cover be peeled away before popping the tablet through a second covering. Pseudoephedrive HCl 15mg is the active ingredient in each tablet. Sudafed is used to relieve nasal congestion due to a cold or allergies. Childrens Sudafed is a non-drowsy formula and the tablets are alcohol and sugar free and intended for children ages 2 and up. Children 2-6 should take one tablet, children 6-12 should take 2 tablets and 4 tablets can be taken by adults and children over the age of 12. The medication can be given every 4-6 hours but no more than 4 doses in 24 hours. As always read all of the warnings (and check the expiration date) before giving this, or any medication to your child. Sudafed Nasal Decongestant is also available in grape flavored liquid.
Our Experience
This cold has not been particularly debilitating, mostly just annoying runny noses and stuffy heads. The girls were still up playing but were getting annoyed that I was coming around to wipe their noses every few minutes. I try not to give my children medication unless they really need it, and after a couple of days I decided it was time for some Sudafed.
This is no miracle product that makes us forget that they are sick, but it does improve the symptoms somewhat. Sudafed seem to work better for my 3 ˝ year old than my 2 year. It definitely reduced their runny noses so I was not chasing them with tissues all day. My older daughter did not really seem to have the same stuffiness as the rest of us so the Sudafed worked very well for her symptoms.
However my younger daughter definitely seemed to be a little sicker, suffering from stuffiness as well. The Sudafed seemed to help a little with that, but not much. Even with regular dosing of Sudafed she is still having some trouble breathing through her nose. Neither of my girls seems to have suffered from any side effects from taking Sudafed.
Giving this medication is easy. I like tablets since both girls chew them and I dont have to worry about measuring out a messy liquid. These must taste good since my 2 year old requests them several times a day. Obviously we limit her to every 4 hours, and by then the Sudafed seems to have worn off and both girls are in need of another dose. Since they end up taking the 4 doses during the day if their cold symptoms wake them at night I cannot give them another dose.
Final Thoughts
Even though we get spotty results with Sudafed it is one of the first mediations I reach for when my children have a cold. Some many cold medications are multi-symptom and I always feel that I am giving my children more than they need. I do wish that Sudafed provided dosing by weight, which is more accurate instead of age.
