Hawaiian Punch Sugar Free Berry Blue Typhoon - Not my favorite flavor
Written: Jan 19 '10 (Updated Feb 04 '10)
Pros:Convenient packets, low in calories.
Cons:Not the best of their flavors.
The Bottom Line: If I'm going to flavor my water, I want the drink to be delicious and convenient. In this case, it's convenient.
It seems there's some controversy over just how much water we're supposed to be drinking each day. Some say 64 ounces. Others use a formula based upon their weight. And, lately, I've seen some articles saying that we really don't need anymore than our thirst level dictates. I don't know what is actually correct. But, for me personally, I know that I feel better when I force myself to drink more water than I naturally would.
But, I can't stand plain water. I can't get myself to drink plain water - it's just not going to happen. And, I don't want to add extra sugar to my diet. So, I rely on sugar-free drink mixes. Lately, I've been going through a whole bunch of the Singles To Go line, from Hawaiian Punch. Today's selection is Berry Blue Typhoon. And I have to say, it's not my favorite.
The Singles To Go line of drink mixes makes it very convenient to make flavored drinks. They come in tubes of powder. Shaped as are, it's extremely easy to empty the contents into any 16 oz. bottle of water. Pour it in, shake the bottle, and you're good to go. That's what the directions say, anyway. As for me, I find them too strong, so I always mix them with a full quart of water. Besides making them taste better, it means I pay half us much per quart.
Despite the fact that the directions call for pouring this powder into a 16 oz. bottle of water, they consider each tube to be two servings. This irks me, but it seems that 8 oz. is the standard serving size for a drink mix. In any case, there are 5 calories per serving, so there are 10 calories per packet. There's no fat, fiber, or protein in this product. Just 5mg of sodium, and 100% of the RDA of vitamin C.
These products contain Aspartame and Acesulfame Potassium as sweeteners. There are also a bunch of chemicals, and "natural and artificial flavor". There's no actual fruit in this product, despite its fruity name.
In this case, it's anybody's guess what flavor "Berry Blue Typhoon" is supposed to be. I've tried this flavor in both full strength and half-strength, and in neither case do I actually taste any berries in there. Or any fruit, in particular. As a matter of fact, it just tastes sweet, and I detect a bit of citrus in there. It's not that it tastes bad, I just don't "love" it. And there are much better flavors out there.
This is definitely not my favorite Singles To Go flavor. These packets are convenient, and sugar-free. But if they don't give me a delicious taste, I'm not going to enjoy my drink, and I won't get my water down. So I'll pass on this flavor, even though I enjoy the line.
