Joseph's Sugar-Free Raspberry Cake Bites - they're not really cake, but they are delicious!
Written: Aug 17 '08 (Updated Jan 13 '09)
Pros:Delicious snack food, with no sugar.
Cons:Misleading name.
The Bottom Line: Thank you, Joseph, for these wonderful treats!
There are many people who can't (or simply don't want to) consume a lot of sugar in their diets. But that doesn't mean they have to give up delicious snack foods. Thanks to Joseph's Lite Cookies Company, producer of many sugar-free items such as cookies, cakes, and syrups. Joseph is the CEO of the company, himself a diabetic. I'm happy that he has dedicated his life to creating wholesome, sugar-free foods.
This review is for the product called Chocolate Raspberry Cake. Note that calling this product a "cake" is really misleading. In fact, these are bite-sized cookies. But they are soft and chewy with a cake-like consistency. Still, as far as I'm concerned they are cookies, and that's how I will refer to them.
Despite the misleading name, this is an awesome product. It is absolutely delicious. The cookies have two distinct flavors - chocolate and raspberry. In fact, without knowing what they are, I think I could correctly identify them. They remind me a bit of those chocolate-covered raspberry jelly candies. The smell inside the bag is pure raspberry.
So what makes them so delicious? Well, Joseph's cookies have the simplest ingredients of any sugar-free cookie I've tried. Flour, Maltitol, cocoa, oil, raspberry flavor, vanilla, baking soda, and baking powder. That's it! Notice how there are no preservatives, and nothing artificial in these cookies. For those unfamiliar with Maltitol, it is a sugar-substitute, in the sugar alcohol family. Like all sugar alcohols, Maltitol can cause dietary distress in some people. So start out with small doses until you know how your system will react.
How about nutrition? Well, a 26g serving (4 cookies), contains 100 calories, 6g of fat, 40mg of sodium, 1g of fiber, and of course, 0g of sugar.
Approximately 12 servings come in the 11 oz. bag. The bags don't re-seal, which is a bummer; I really wish there were a zipper seal at the top. The cookies, themselves, are small, approximately 1.25" diameter.
My local supermarket sells the Joseph's cookies in its own section in the cookie aisle. Each bag is just under $4, making them a bit more expensive than most of the other brands of sugar-free cookies. But in this case, it's worth it!
