Sugar-Free Peeps - Chicks that chicks who don't eat sugar can eat.

Written: Mar 01 '09 (Updated Mar 01 '09)
Pros:Cute to look at, tasty to eat, low in calories, no fat.
Cons:Not exactly wholesome ingredients.  A bit messy.
The Bottom Line: It's great to find more and more products available in sugar-free versions. And this one happens to taste pretty good!

Ah Peeps.  Those yellow, sugar-laden, sticky candies shaped like cute little chicks.  I thought my peeps days were over for good, when I stopped eating sugar.  But guess what?  They now have Sugar Free Peeps

The little chickies look just like the originals.  With their cute eyes and noses.  They're a bright yellow, coated with a sticky substance that feels just like sugar crystals, but obviously aren't sugar.

They weigh basically nothing.  These little chicks come in a package of three, and the whole package weighs only 1 oz.  The entire package is considered a serving, with only 60 calories.  There's no fat, no cholesterol and no sodium.

How do they taste?  Well, it's been decades since I've tasted the real thing, but I'm pretty sure these are similar.  I like them.  They taste like marshmallow.  They're soft, sticky, and very sweet.  I have to admit I don't really care for the eyes - they're little dots that are hard and crunchy.  But they're easily removable, if you want to bypass them.

They're a bit messy to eat, though. The crystal-like coating on the outside tends to come off, leaving yellow specks everywhere.

What makes them so sweet?  Lots of artificial sweeteners.  Maltitol, Sorbitol, and Splenda-brand Sucralose.   Use caution if you're unsure how your system will react - some people experience dietary distress when they consume such a cocktail of chemicals.

The other main ingredients are gelatin, and carnauba wax.  Plus a bunch of chemicals for color and preservatives.  Let's face it - from an ingredients point of view, this isn't the most wholesome of snacks.

But for an occasional snack that's cute to look at, tastes pretty good, and won't kill your diet, this isn't a bad choice.  At least now, people who can't (or simply don't) eat sugar can indulge in this holiday tradition.
