| calwaone's Full Review: Sulfodene Skin Medication for Dogs |
SULFADENE was what I chose, after speaking to a veterinarian about a big red Irish Setter of mine who scratched terribly! He, literally, shook the room, as he scratched and scratched! I had rescued him from the pound, so I wasn't surprised when he had many pests on him. His poor skin was raw from the flea bites mixed with his scratching.
I used the Sulfadene shampoo on him, as directed. I followed all the directions, to the 'nth degree. He acted as though the shampoo burned his skin, but I thought that was due to his bare spots being so raw, already. The Sulfadene did not help him at all. I tried bacon grease in his foot to help his skin and coat, and that didn't help, either. I quit giving him Sulfadene baths, when I realized that he was really getting a burned type skin rash all over his scratched area. I spoke to my veterinarian, and he agreed that Sulfadene was making the itching worse. We never found a product to help out ol' Roger Dodger (the Irish setter).
I had a tiny teacup poodle, about 2 pounds worth of pet. He became flea infested, when my husband used flea control on the lawn. I think the fleas jumped on him to get off the grass! He was totally a house dog, as was Roger Dodger. Poor Gypsy, the poodle, though. He was in pain with Sulfadene. He never whined or howled during a bath. He always seemed proud to be bathed, and stood beautifully for it. When I used the Sulfadene, he 'yiped' at first, then, he made sounds of having real pain. I followed all directions. After the bath in this solution, he laid down and moaned. Normally, after bathing, Gypsy was a runner and player. Gypsy nearly died from that bath. I had to wash him very, very well to try to get all I could off of his coat and skin! He couldn't eat, he whailed and he moaned. The veterinarian said he almost died. (I am lucky, the veterinarian lives right by me).
I cannot give Sulfadene a good recommendation. I will never use it again on any animal. There are other products that will take care of pests on your pet that do not burn them. I use many other types, now, and no burning reaction happens! Watch your pet's reaction to a small spot on him/her before you douse your pet in this solution! It can harm, it can kill, or it may be perfect for your pet. Find out with a patch test, first!
