| soothsayer's Full Review: Sullivan Street Bakery |
Sullivan Street Bakery is one of the city’s best, with many top restaurants and gourmet stores purchasing its bread from them. Their bread is crusty, rough hewn and encrusted with a fine layer of flour. When broken, it yields its soft yeasty inside and heavenly aromas. The flavors are absolutely wonderful.
The décor of the bakery is very modern, and airy with the predominate use of beech wood furnishings. The space is almost like an art gallery, but the only art practiced here is the traditional art of bread making, and the artisans involved are masters of their craft.
Among the fine bread selections of the Sullivan Street Bakery is the Pain Bianca or roman pizza. Roman Pizza is a thin thin, crisp on the outside rectangular (about 3-4 foot long) bread rubbed with olive oil and a bit of sea salt and some sprigs of rosemary. If you want to know what the bread in a pizza is supposed to be like, then you must try the Pain Bianca, $1.00 for a 5x10 inch slice. The bread is quite airy, almost nothing inside, but VERY flavorful, and VERY delicious.
The bakery also offers versions of pain bianca topped with various ingredients. The best is the pizza funghi, $2.00 for a 4x5 inch square. It was covered with finely chopped mushrooms, the flavors of which explode in your mouth, with the crisp crunch of thin bread underneath. There are other flavors (potato, tomato) all excellent and priced the same.
Among the bakery's other variety of breads, is the raisin walnut round bread, one of my favorites. It is $4.25 for an 8 inch loaf, and $0.85 for a roll. It is a rough-hewn wheat bread textured with the crunch and sweet flavor of walnuts and soft raisins inside, very good flavor and texture.
The sourdough pullman, for $3.75, was also good. It is rectangular resembling a loaf of "white bread" outside, but a little more browned, and a little more oily. The flavor of the pullman was very sharp and delicious. The Demi di Sesame, for $3.00, is a bargain. It has a wonderful sesame smell, and is delicious all the same. There are other breads, baguettes and rolls of different shapes, sizes and flavors available. They also make nice looking tarts and pastries, but I have not tried them yet.
You can buy bread by the loaf, half-loaf, or by the slice. If you eat plan on eating your bread right away, they have honey and extra virgin olive oil for you to dip your bread in if you want. The bakery also sells coffee (self-serve), tea, and various sundries. You can sit outside on a bench to relax and enjoy the quiet of the neighborhood.
