| marytara's Full Review: Summer Infant Sure and Secure Double Bedrail - Pin... |
My four year daughter was able to stay in a toddler bed for a really long time, well past 3 years old. She had the cutest little Dora toddler bed that didn't take up very much space at all in her room. It was low to the ground and had built in bedrails. It was just perfect, except she decided she didn't want to sleep in it anymore. So, sometime last year we switched her to a 'big girl' bed. The bed we gave her was intended to be the lower bunk for my son's loft bed and it isn't real high off the ground. But, it was still high enough in comparison to that little toddler bed for my whirling dervish of a daughter to manage to land on the floor and fall out of just about every night. This was clearly a problem and when I mentioned that I needed to go out and buy a bedrail one of my friends came through for me and lent me one. All was well and good, until her youngest was graduating from a toddler bed and she needed it back.
We tried a night without a railing on the bed and my daughter flipped out (literally), so the next morning off I went. The only bed rail that they had at the store (it was either Target or Wal-Mart) was this Summer Infant Sure and Secure Double Bedrail and it was $29.99. The packaging showed that it came in pink or blue, so I went with pink for my little girl and received a lot of approval from my daughter on the selection.
This is a double bedrail which means you can set it up so that it goes on both sides of the bed. My daughter's bed is actually up against a wall, so we really didn't need a double rail. I was afraid that the hinge and rail would damage the wall from rubbing against it where it protrudes so I only set up one side of it. Summer Infant and several other companies offer single side bedrails which I would have purchased if the store had one that day but since it didn't we are stuck with a double rail. However, should the bed ever be turned the other direction we'll be in a good shape.
You can use the double bedrail on a bed ranging from twin to queen. Assembly is straightforward and the hardest part really is putting it under your mattress. It is meant to go in between a mattress and a boxspring. My daughter's bed doesn't use a boxspring because it is a lower bunk but it fits on just fine under her mattress.
The rail is 42" long and 20" high and consists of a cloth/mesh covered aluminum frame. We set the bedrail up so it is just below the pillow on the side of her bed and it leaves about a foot at the bottom of her bed unguarded. She uses this open section for getting on and off of her bed since the rail is kept up at all times. Though the rail has a release lever on it to 'open' it up, we don't use it. This is because the bedrail doesn't drop down flush and instead it just folds out part of the way making it slightly easier to make the bed but not really any easier to get in and out of the bed.
Despite the obvious nuisance it can provide during bed-making, this pink bedrail has been a lifesaver for us. My daughter is safe in her bed and it keeps her from falling out. She loves that its pink which matches her room and it isn't babyish looking. I have found my daughter laying up right against the railing and it has held her in the bed and not given way under her weight. I have been very happy with this Summer Infant Bedrail, and absolutely recommend it if you are transitioning to a big kid bed or have a child who is a very active sleeper and needs to be safely contained in their bed.
