During the long winter we all long for summer and all the fun it brings. When my daughter received Summer in her Scholastic Book Club I knew it would be a book that I would enjoy as much as she would.
All About Summer
Summer is a book that you may find being in one of you shipments from the Scholastic Book Club (a book club I highly recommend by the way!) It was written by Alice Low with pictures done by Roy McKie. It was published in 1963 in New York by Beginner Books, a division of Random House and simultaneously in Toronto, Canada by Random House of Canada, Limited.
Summer is a pretty long book with 61 pages although there isn't a lot of script on each page. The book is written in a rhyming format with easy words that most young children will understand.
The illustrations look like colored in pencil drawings. In fact, the word illustrations doesn't appear anywhere on this book with credit being given to the illustrator for his "pictures". The pictures are very cute and the book as a whole is quite colorful.
The Story
The story appears to be about a brother, sister and dog and what they all like about summer. They like the sun, the heat and the food. They like riding their bikes, watching fireworks, swimming, and swinging on their swings. They like going on car rides and playing on the beach. They like playing in fields and catching butterflies and going to the summer fair. Each stanza of the story starts with "Summer brings so many things" and continues to go on and list the many joys of summer.
Summer brings so many things! On summer nights we like to be inside a tent just right for three
At the end of the story the pup falls asleep while the brother and sister continue to think of all the happy things that summer brings.
Why We Recommend Summer
The story of Summer is just so much fun and it really illustrates what childhood is all about. Reading this book brought back many happy memories of all the fun things I did during the summer and memories I hope to have with Courtney during her summers as a child.
Courtney really likes this book with her favorite part being the fireworks. We live near where they set off fireworks every Memorial Day and we watched them out of her bedroom window last year and still remembers them. She also likes to point out the many things that she has also done, like ride her bike and swing on her swingset.
Overall I highly recommend Summer. It's a fun story that your child will be able to relate to and it will bring back a lot of happy summer time memories for mom and dad as well.
