Despite being rather hefty, the Sun/Ringle Rhino Lite is an exceptionally versitle rim. When laced up with 15 gauge spokes either 3 crossed or radial (front wheel only), the Rhino Lites can pass for a heavy duty cross country wheel, though most racers will probably choose something with a little less rotational weight.
Where the Rhino Lite really shines though is as a rock-solid freeride or slalom wheel. Laced up with 14 guage spokes three or four crossed, there are few low-profile rims out there than can match the strength of the Rhyno Lites.
What makes this rim so strong is in its design. Sun used what is typically refered to as a "tripple-hollow" or "tripple box" design, which simply means that there are three cavities created by two I beams that run the entire length of the rim. This design offers much more strength and durablility over rims that use either a double cavity or single cavity design.
The Rhyno Lite is available in two different models, the most common of which has a machined breaking surface for increased break control and comes with a pinned joint, and retails for somewhere in the neighborhood of $30-35.
The upgraded Rhyno Lite is a few millimeters wider for added traction and control and also comes with the machined breaking surface, but has a welded joint which allows for more even weight distribution and balance as well as greater durability, and retails for around $45.
So if you're looking for a no-nonsense rim for use in some of the most demanding conditions, the Sun/Ringle Rhyno Lite is one of your better options.
