Pest Repeller? Not this product!

Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:Safe for household pets, inexpensive, night light

Cons:doesn't work, clicking noise, waste of time and money

The Bottom Line: If you have a problem with pests then you need to try something else, ANYTHING else, because this product does NOT work.

Directly behind my home was a field and a little further behind it was a wooded area. Recently there has been some development of that area and we believe they are going to build apartment buildings. Of course that means that the creatures that were happily living in that area have now began to invade our home. My neighbor and I had noticed an increase in bugs of all sorts when the development began behind our homes and then we also noticed mice.

I decided to try something but I wanted to make sure it would be safe for pets. I have two puppies and an eclectus parrot. I wanted to make sure that whatever I used would be safe for my pets. Since this happened as the weather was beginning to make changes here in Kentucky I knew that using a pest bomb wouldn't be a good idea because I would have to take my bird out of the house in cool weather and risk him getting a respiratory infection. I also didn't want to use anything that had to be left out, such as traps, because my youngest puppy is very curious about things and I wouldn't want her to get ahold of something that would hurt her or make her ill.

While I was at Walmart I decided to see what options were available. I found the Sunbeam SB105 Ultrasonic Pest Repeller for only $4.99 each. I read the information on the packaging and although I only needed to purchase six for the size of my home I still chose to purchase twelve of them. I wanted enough so that I could place two in every room of my home. I was led to believe that this product would effectively eliminate pests and rodents without harm to my household pets including my bird. You know the saying "Don't believe everything you read, it's true.

I followed all of the directions on packaging and placed the repellers in areas where they were not hidden behind furniture. Two days after placing these in my home I hadn't noticed any difference at all but I was willing to give it some time until I walked into my bathroom and found a group of aunts walking across the repeller. I knew then that there was no way these things were working. I would not recommend that anyone purchase these. I was lucky because I was able to return the Sunbeam Pest Repellers to Walmart for a refund. When I did so I was told by the Customer Service Manager that she had also tried them and wasn't happy with the results.

After that I did a little internet research on the product, which I should have done before purchasing it. I found only one review on epinions that stated the person had used them for an experiment and that lab rodents had been totally indifferent to this product.

The Product - Sunbeam SB105 Ultrasonic Pest Repeller
The Sunbeam Pest Repeller is a plug in device that emits ultrasonic waves that are supposed to repel insects and rodents. The ultrasonic waves are claimed to have a higher frequency than what a dog can hear and therefore doesn't effect your household pets, unless you own a rodent (hamster, gerbil, mice). The idea behind the product is that this high frequency sound will irritate pests and they will leave your home. The product claims to operate silently. While you can't hear the actual sound waves it does make a clicking sound every few seconds. It is irritating.

One Sunbeam Pest Repeller should be able to provide protection for a 12 x 18 room. The product information that comes with these repellers states that you should place them in an area that is no blocked by furniture because the sound may be blocked or bounced off in a different direction by doing so.

The product is safe for use. There are no chemicals used in this product and it is safe. However, it doesn't get rid of the pests and therefore is a waste of your money. As safe as it is for you and your pets, it is just as safe for the pests you are trying to rid your home of.

The Sunbeam Pest Repeller doubles as a night light. Finally, a legitimate use for this product. There is a night light with an on and off switch on this product and it does work. In addition there is an ac outlet on the side of the product so that you aren't using up all of your outlets just to plug up the repellers. Still, at $4.99 this night light with outlet is a little expensive since it doesn't do anything else.

The Sunbeam Pest Repeller has an LED light that lets you know the product is on and working properly. All you have to do is plug it in and it begins to repel pests (according to the manufacturer). All my lights were on when there were aunts walking across the unit and mice in my cabinets.

There was some interesting information provided in the paper work that came with the product that I felt was worth mentioning. First of all there was a warning. The warning stated that this product should not be used if you have a Pacemaker or any other medical device that is effected by ultrasonic waves. This didn't surprise me. But it also stated that the product should not be used near a property line or for a common wall (such as in apartment buildings where your wall is also your neighbor's wall). I am not sure why this would be a problem and they didn't try to explain it either. One more warning stated that pests may become accustom to the sounds of the device and return to their nesting places. That sounds like an admission that the product does not work. Also in the paper work was a list of suggestions to make this product more effective. The list seemed to be things that would help to eliminate pests without the product.

Suggestions
According to the product information these are things that will make the Sunbeam Pest Repellers more effective.

* Continuously Use - this makes sense to me and I would believe that if the product worked it would be necessary to continue use at all times.

* Put Away Food - I assumed that if you were trying to get rid of pests you would have already done this. However, if this product worked there shouldn't be a need to do so.

* Repair Openings in the house, windows, garage, etc - this is the one that really got me. Basically, if you have any way for a pest to get in then it limits the effectiveness of the product. Of course if there was a way to seal up every little hole and crawl space there would be no need for the product in the first place.

* Avoid Placing behind furniture - this is another one that didn't bother me much. I can understand how it might effect the product and therefore I made a huge effort to place all of my repellers in open areas.

*******************************
In conclusion, I found this product to be a waste of money and time. It didn't work, others have said it doesn't work for them either, and even the product information leaves room for doubt. I would not recommend that anyone purchase this product, ever!
