Located in the Mohegan Suns Casino of the Sky, the Sunburst Buffet is a nice place to eat if you are looking for a variety of different tastes set in a pleasant atmosphere thats a bit classier than your typical buffet experience.
While definitely not fine dining, the Sunburst Buffet does offer plenty of variety in a comfortable setting. I like the wide variety of foods that are available and the sundae station where they hand scoop the various flavors of hard ice cream is not to be missed.
Where do I find the Sunburst Buffet?
The Sunburst Buffet is located just off of the casino floor in the Casino of the Sky along its outer edge. The buffet is located between the newer Fastbreak restaurant and the SolToro Tequilla Grill.
The Sunburst Buffet doesnt tend to be quite as busy as the Seasons Buffet in the Casino of the Earth, but lines can get pretty long right at lunchtime and dinnertime. In addition, the Sunburst Buffet isnt quite as big as the Seasons Buffet, so the line can take a bit more time to move.
When can I eat at the Sunburst Buffet?
The Sunburst Buffet is open from 11am to 9pm Sunday through Thursday. On Friday and Saturdays the buffet is open from 11am to 11pm.
Id suggest trying to eat a bit off the peak hours to get in without too much of a wait, just make sure its not too late during the week as the buffet does close at 9pm. I know several times Ive played for a bit and then gone over and been like oops, its closed.
Ambiance & Service
Hey, its a buffet, but the overall atmosphere of the Sunburst Buffet is a step up from your typical buffet experience. Its well lit and decorated almost all over with bright and cheery colors. The entire area is clean and well maintained and while the tables are fairly close to one another there are a number of comfortable booths also available.
Service is generally quite good. When it first opened I had a few bad experiences with individual wait staff, but over time this has improved. Our drinks are promptly brought over and kept filled and the dirty plates are quickly removed from our table.
What can I eat?
Oh, this is where I really like the Sunburst Buffet. They have a number of different stations offering various kinds of foods. This includes a fresh salad and fruit station that also features a number of hot soups. Beyond that you can go to the grill station, stop for some stir fry, get some pasta, pick up some freshly baked bread or check out a number of other offerings.
Whats really cool about the Sunburst Buffet is that each area is staffed by chefs who cook and prepare the dishes available at each station right there. You know its fresh because you see them cooking it.
I always find a pasta dish I like along with plenty of different choices and dishes that usually contain chicken, pork and various seafood items. I almost always go for some of the roasts too - getting the beef or the turkey (or both) depending on my mood.
Then on top of all that for dessert, there are a ton of great choices. You can have a freshly made Belgian waffle, handcrafted crepes or my personal favorite, hand-scooped ice cream made into a sundae any way that you like it.
The Sunburst Buffet doesnt offer breakfast, youll have to go over to the Seasons Buffet for that.
Does it taste good?
Yes.
Ive always been pleasantly surprised at the overall food quality at the Sunburst Buffet. I think thats due to the fact that its generally prepared right at each station and the chefs at each station make sure what is available is as good as it can be.
Ive never come across a really bad dish either. Most things are obviously buffet foods, but in general the overall quality of the meal is a step above what you would normally find at a buffet.
In general I just really like it and Ive always liked the food here. If I had to choose a best buffet between the two buffets at Mohegan Sun and the one at Foxwoods, I would say that the Sunburst Buffet is the best.
Another thing I like is the fact that the food does change over time. Some buffets have the same stuff at every station no matter when you visit. At the Sunburst Buffet there are some standbys but a lot of the time the dishes change throughout the year so you wont always be choosing from the same things on different visits.
Any complaints?
Besides the bad service I had on my first few visits years ago, I havent had any problems to speak of at the Sunburst Buffet.
My biggest complaint is probably that theres almost always a line at this buffet, if only because the overall dining area is significantly smaller than other buffets Ive been to. Thus it just takes a while to cycle people in and out.
How much?
The Sunburst Buffet cost about $19 for adults and $10 for children under 12. Theres no difference between lunch and dinner prices.
This is a bit more than the Seasons Buffet in the Casino of the Earth, but you are paying for the more distinct food and the better dining atmosphere.
Final Thoughts
When Im in the mood for a buffet meal at Mohegan Sun, I really like coming to the Sunburst Buffet. They have some excellent dishes and they have a nice variety. Not only that but the overall dining experience at the Sunburst Buffet is a step above your average buffet and I like that.
In general, I always recommend the Sunburst Buffet as the first choice for anyone visiting Mohegan Sun who wants to have a buffet. Id only caution you that the line can be very long right at lunchtime or dinnertime and even at off-peak times, there is often something of a wait.
Considering that the food is good, the service is good and the dining atmosphere is nice for a buffet, theres no reason not to have a meal at the Sunburst Buffet in Mohegan Sun. More than likely youll be glad you did.
