Sun Chips Multigrain Harvest Cheddar Snacks - Delicious, and not terrible for me.
Written: Jan 17 '10
Pros:Delicious, reasonable calories, lower in sodium than you'd expect.
Cons:A bit higher in fat than I'd prefer.
The Bottom Line: I'm not going to claim that chips are the healthiest foods out there. But when I need to satisfy my salt craving, these chips are a decent option.
Salty snacks are a definite weakness in our house. We frequently reach for crackers, chips or pretzels. Lately we've been enjoying a variety of Sun Chips called Multigrain Harvest Cheddar.
When my husband first brought these home, I was skeptical. Because I don't care for the original flavor of Sun Chips. So I didn't expect to like this variety. Boy was I wrong!
These chips are really delicious! They are not nearly as salty as I was thinking they'd be. And they have a terrific cheesy flavor, with delicious seasoning. Plus, I like their shapes - wavy squares, fairly large and thick. Yes, when it comes to taste, this is a very satisfying snack!
As far as nutrition goes, one ounce of these chips contains a reasonable 140 calories and a mere 160mg of sodium. Considering this is a salty snack, that's a very low sodium count! Plus you get 2g of fiber. But, unfortunately, this is not a low-fat snack. That ounce of chips will contribute 6g of fat, which is a bit higher than I prefer. For comparison purposes, Lays makes a baked potato chip that I really enjoy that has only 1.5g of fat per ounce. On the other hand, some brands of regular potato chips could have 10g of fat per ounce. So the fat content in these Sun Chips is really a middle-of-the-road amount.
According to the package, each serving also contains... "18g of whole grains, which may help reduce the risk of heart disease". Honestly, I don't really know a whole lot about whole grains. I know they're supposed to be healthier for us. So, if I'm going to eat a chip, I might as well eat one that adds a healthy component.
The first several ingredients are corn, sunflower oil, whole wheat, whole oat flour, rice flour, harvest cheddar seasoning, whey, buttermilk, and Romano cheese.
I don't eat these chips every day, but when I crave a salty snack, this is one that I enjoy. Buying them in the 1 oz. packages means I can keep my intake to a reasonable level. Plus, they're easy to toss into a purse or a lunch bag. These are convenient, tasty, and not the worst, in terms of nutrition. A winner, in my house.
