| kesslerdee's Full Review: Sunseed Leafy Greens |
In my never ending quest to improve my picky parakeets diet I came across "Leafy Greens" by Sun Seed at my local pet store. A 1 oz package cost me 2.29 which is reasonable enough. Leafy Greens are actually dehydrated pieces of Alfalfa leaves, Parsley, Spinach and Celery. It sounds like it could make Popeye's out of parakeets!
The mix of dehydrated greens provides birds with a nutrient boost that they really enjoy. Since my parakeets are of the very finicky variety I started them out by sprinkling some Leafy Greens on their very favorite fresh food, corn kernels cut off the cob. They love fresh corn kernels more than just about any other food and if it is possible they were even more enthusiastic about them mixed with the Leafy Greens.
The package instructs you to sprinkle it over your birds daily portion of birdseed or to offer as a training reward. I find my birds enjoy it either way, mixed with their regular seed or fresh food or on its own. Either way they are getting those extra nutrients that only come in dark green or orange vegetables.
There are a couple other variety's of Leafy Greens that also have dehydrated fruits and vegetables added to the greens mix. For the plain Leafy Greens mix the package analysis is as follows:
Crude Protein 14% min
Crude Fat 2% min
Crude Fiber 24% max
Moisture 14% max
The only thing I would like to see improved on this product is the packaging. The inside cellaphane bag does not reseal so you need to put the product inside a ziplock baggie after you open it for the first time or it is likely to spill easily.
Sun Seed does offer a money back guarantee on all of its products. It also states that many of its ingredients are locally grown which means fresher ingredients. I will continue my quest to improve my birds diet with fresh fruits and vegetables but it is nice having a product like Leafy Greens which the birds enjoy and I know offers them good nutrition. Give it a try!
