Video Game Characters Star in Animated Parodies of Movies

Written: Mar 28 '08
Pros:Entertaining parodies staring recognizable Nintendo characters
Cons:Probably will only appeal to Nintendo fans
The Bottom Line: Great animated show that especially appeals to Mario video game fans. Interesting movie parodies in these episodes.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.

The Super Mario Bros. Super Show is a cartoon show based on the characters in the Mario games made by Nintendo. The show originally aired in 1989, so it is old style animation and is based on only the early Mario game characters. This means some of the characters have different names than they do in the more modern Mario games. For example, the Princess is still known as Princess Toadstool and not Princess Peach. Overall though it is still very recognizable as being based on the Mario games even for kids who have only played the newer Mario games. The main characters in the show are Mario, Luigi, the Princess, and Toad, who join together to stop King Koopa’s evil plans. The shows contain a lot of familiar enemies as well, such as Koombas and Piranha Plants. Overall the episodes on this DVD are interesting parodies of movies that incorporate recognizable aspects from the video games and some funny phrases in the parodies.

The first episode is called “Star Koopa.” This is a parody of Star Wars with Jedi Mario fighting Darth Koopa. Instead of the force it is “May the pasta be with you.” Mario fights Darth Koopa and saves the Mushroom Space Colony.

The second episode is called “Toad Warriors.” This is parody of Road Warriors. In this episode all the Koopa has stolen all the spaghetti sauce in Car Land. Mario, Luigi, and the Princess are on the road to the Mushroom Rebel Fort to help make more spaghetti sauce when they Koopa attacks them.

The third episode is called “Robo Koopa.” It is a parody of Robo Cop. In this episode Koopa uses the help of Dr. Nerdnick to make himself into a robot. Mario and Luigi join together to defeat him after they save the scientist from being Koopa’s captive.

The fourth episode is called “In Her Majesty’s Sewer Service.” This is a parody of James Bond. In the episode James Blonde gets turned to stone and the Princess calls on Mario and Luigi to become secret agents. They must try to defeat Koopfinger (King Koopa) and stop his evil plots as well as save James Blonde. They have some fun plumber secret agent gadgets to help them including a laser drill and plumber/plunger missiles There is also a funny Wheel of Fortune parody within this episode with Vampa White spinning the Wheel of Misfortune to determine Mario and Luigi’s fate when Koopfingers has them captive.

This DVD’s only special feature is a Bonus Episode, which is a very worthwhile one and my favorite parody on this DVD. This episode is called “Raiders of the Lost Mushroom.” This is a parody of Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. In the episode the gang is in Jungle Land looking for the Lost Mushroom, which is a statue that grants the wishes of whoever possesses it. They enlist the help of Indiana Joe to help find the mushroom, but he leaves them after showing where it is because he notices King Koopa is after the mushroom and he has a Koopaphobia. Mario, Luigi, the Princess, and Toad must make him overcome his fear and help them keep the Lost Mushroom from staying in Koopa’s control. This is one of the more adventurous and interesting episodes, although the Indiana Joe character is kind of weird in that he has no facial features like eyes and a mouth.
