SuperTroopers - Sarcastic Title, Bumbling Idiots
Written: Dec 09 '02 (Updated Apr 08 '08)
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
When I first saw the previews to Super Troopers I thought it looked like the stupidest thing in the world. So, one boring night I dragged myself to the theaters still not knowing what was I about to encounter. As I sat down in the seats I asked my friend what the movie was about and the only response I got was "It's suppose to be some funny movie about these police". Wow big deal I thought, I could have stayed home and watched Cops on CourtTv. After 5 minutes into the movie I was laughing hysterically at the comical genius thrown into this low budget movie.
Super Troopers is classified as "comedy", and fits right into the subdivision of "stupid comedy" as you would get from Airplane, Animal House, Naked Gun, National Lampoons Vacation, and Police Academy.
Background:
Super Troopers is based in a county in Vermont (somewhere near the border). Within the town is a Highway Patrol, and the local police department. There's always been a feud between the two forces, and when news spreads about the governor cutting funding to the Highway Patrol, things only get worse. As you we find out in the beginning, the Highway Patrol is not very professional.
The Main Characters:
- Thorny (Jay Chandrasekhar) - the African American, Mexican, Puerto Rican, (whatever the hell he is) character who ranks highest among the highway patrol squad. He follows the rules and tries to keep his squad straightened out, but even he gets into trouble.
- Foster (Paul Soter) - is the prankster of the group. He leads his fellow squad members on fake police chases and shootouts. At times you wouldn't even think he's police force material and should be in Jackass The Movie.
- Mac (Steve Lemme) - is also a prankster but with a warm hearted caring side, and all through the movie tries to hook up with Ursula (Marisa Coughlan) from the local police division.
- Rabbit (Erik Stolhanske) - the squad's rookie who falls right into the middle of these pranks. He doesn't learn much about being a real cop, but his squad members show him what jokes are all about.
- Farva (Kevin Heffernan) - is the highway patrol's bafoon. He's on the end of all pranks, gets hazed by the local police, and even turns on his own fellow officers in the end of the movie.
LOL Laughing Out Loud:
Most of the comedy planted into the movie are stupid high school gags played out by the Highway Patrol. In the beginning a car full of pot head teenagers are driving along and Thorny & Rabbit pull up behind them with lights and sirens. The teenagers freak out and start chugging down their stash of pot and mushrooms, only to sigh in relief as the squad car drives on up the road. The teenagers pull over and collect themselves, only to be freaked out again as the squad card slams on it's breaks, backs-up on the highway, and stops behind their car. Once again the squad car takes off, and the teenagers sit in disbelief at what is happening. After a few brief moments out of nowhere the same squad car magically appears behind them again, with lights flashing and sirens wailing, and Thorny yelling over the loudspeaker to pull over. Ironically the car has been pulled over for the past 5 minutes and the teenager freak out again, pleading they are pulled over already. This is just one of the many games played out in the movie, which is where most of the humor can be found.
Plot Complete, But Rather Stale
The basic plot is that the governor is shutting down one of the Highway Patrol stations in Vermont and this station is a main target. In order to keep their jobs, the squad must make the biggest drugs bust ever to impress the governor. While it sounds simple enough, the workaholic local police always seem to show up and get the job done before Highway Patrol ever get there. If this were a serious movie with no jokes, it would be the dullest thing ever, but luckily there is plenty of humor to go around.
Is This For You?
As I said earlier, Super Troopers is composed of unknown actors, which actually makes this movie funny. If Adam Sandler or Chris Farely were portrayed as a main character it just wouldn't work. If you're into those "stupid funny" movies like Airplane, Animal House and Naked Gun then you should give Super Troopers a try. There's tons of comedy, mostly practical jokes, and whatnot. There are some adult scenes: Farve being hazed while nude by the local police, and a group orgy about to take place with a female prisoner, Rabbit screwing a fake bear in the woods, and Mac/Ursula making out in a squad car. I wouldn't recommend this to younger viewers because of the sexual scenes, use of foul language, and practical jokes that might gives kids bad ideas. If you aren't bothered by this stuff, invite a friend over, break open some beer and chips, and enjoy this laugh out loud movie!
