disneylandhero's Full Review: Superman Returns for Xbox 360
Electronic Arts tries scoring big with a Superman title, but leaves the player sorely wanting more. The first level of flying high into the sky to stop showering meteorites is actually quite thrilling and leads one to believe that this game has some potential. Flying at hundreds of miles an hour can leave an individual feeling empowered and euphoric. Then unleashing an array of superpowers such as Heat Vision and Freeze Breath add to the omnipotence one may feel playing this game. Unfortunately, neither flight nor superpowers are enough to carry a players attention through this boring and low detailed game which follows the first level.
CONTROLS
The simple and easy to remember controls of Superman Returns makes flying a snap, but degrades the combat play horribly. Combinations of buttons are supposed to increase your fighting power, but more often than not, mashing the punch button remains the quickest way of dispatching enemies. The sad thing is that almost all of the enemies throughout the game end up being fought in virtually the same manner. Either button mash until they are dead, or chuck a car at them.
GRAPHICS
Superman himself appears to be wearing a cape that his mother would have fashioned for him out of an old red blanket. The cape moves in odd directions while flying and has no detail on it at all. Then when taking to the skies and soaring high over the sprawling city of Metropolis, buildings do in fact look beautiful. It's when you land on the ground and take a closer look at the city do all the ugly details pop up. Simple cars, low detailed civilians, and a horde of silly looking robots and monsters are to be found. Most all of these objects appear no better than what can be found on a normal XBOX. The only beautifully animated elements of the game are the cut-scenes, and you can't play as Superman through any of those.
LEARNING CURVE
The game takes only fifteen to twenty minutes to master, and that is just for an average player. The overall difficulty could be incredibly simple at times, while other times taking two or three tries to complete a task. Superman having to save Metropolis every minute as his primary task becomes old "extremely" quickly and is terribly repetitive. Boss battles add the only hint of variety, and they still end up becoming car throwing contests without much thought of strategy involved.
OVERALL
If somehow you find yourself able to play this game for more than an hour, you must be one patient person. There just are not enough fun elements or variety to keep Superman Returns in your XBOX 360. Only the cut-scenes relate in any way to the actual movie of Superman Returns, and the rest is a mishmash of random villains. Save yourself some money and do not buy this game. Wal-Mart and most other suppliers of video games have already lowered Superman Returns price in hopes of getting rid of it. Don't fall for these traps as any money spent on this game is money lost.
