Zachariah: What, you thought you could actually kill Lucifer? You simpering wad of insecurity and self-loathing? No. You're just a human, Dean. And not much one of them.
Dean Winchester: What do you mean, I'm the sword?
Zachariah: Michael's weapon. Or, rather, his... receptacle.
Dean Winchester: I'm a vessel?
Zachariah: You're "the" vessel. Michael's vessel.
Dean Winchester: How? Why? Why me?
Zachariah: Because you're chosen! It's a great honor, Dean.
Dean Winchester: Oh, yeah. Yeah, life as an Angel condom. That's real fun!
 
The Winchester Brothers, Sam and Dean (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) have been raised, almost from birth, into a life of hunting ghosts, and wendigo, and things that go bump in the night.  Over the past four seasons the boys have searched for their missing father, found him, lost him and both have died.  Dean sold his soul to the demon of the crossroads to have Sam back.  In exchange, he got one year of life before he was sent to hell.  Sam is tainted with demon blood, the prophesized general of the Armies of Hell.  He can destroy demons with his mind.  Dean comes back from beyond the grave, and then they try to stop Lilith, a high level demon, from breaking the 66 seals and freeing the devil.  They failed.
 
Now Lucifer is back on earth, and the Apocalypse is under way.  Furthermore, it is the real deal, and Lucifer and the Armies of Hell will battle it out against the Heavenly Host, lead by the Arch Angel Michael.  The thing is, Angels and Demons can't just exist on our plane; they have to possess someone; their angel friend Castiel (Misha Collins) possesses a faithful man named Jimmy.  Lucifer and Michael, brother arch angels, need vessels to carry out this war.  And they have chosen the two strongest candidates from all the bloodlines of the earth; Sam and Dean Winchester.
 
So Sam is supposed to let the Devil in, and Dean is supposed to let Michael drive his meat-suit, and the two brothers will then try to kill each other, destroying about half the world in the process.
 
Not if Sam and Dean have anything to say about it.
 
There are signs and portents; the star wormwood has fallen, the dead have risen, and all hell is breaking loose....and it is up to two brothers, one with demon tainted blood, the other with a GED and a give'em hell attitude to save the world!
 
This show continues to amaze me.  They can take it through such twists and turns, unveiling the mysteries of the master plan, but somehow, the show never gets bogged down in its own mythology.  It works on a lot of levels, because it is first a human drama about a family, and the bonds of brotherhood that keep it together, and co-dependence that threaten to destroy the world.  Sam and Dean are very accessable.  One, they are both just dead sexy.  Jensen is classically handsome; Jared has a smoldering sexuality on a 6'4" frame.  But beyond that, these are working class boys.  They wear army surplus and flannel.  They eat in diners and truck stops.  They drive a 68 Impala and listen to Classic Rock.  But no one could ever mistake them for simple rednecks, unless they wanted them too.  They are intelligent, value foresight and planning, are creative and cunning, and most of all brave.  You have to be to face down vampires and roogaroos.  They sass demons before they kill them.  They tell angels where to stick it.  And they are their own men.  Oh, they are frequently played like a violin, but they embody that uniquely American "F U, I'll do it my own way" attitude.
 
The Devil is on the loose, the war of heaven is on hold, and Four Horsemen have ridden, and there is one season left.  What can they possibly do to top all this?  I cannot wait to find out.
