Pros: Good variety of delicious German foods and beer
Cons: somewhat pricey, uncomfortable shared tables, staff is rude
The Bottom Line: I guess I'm the only person who thinks rude service is a showstopper since this place is very crowded. I'll go with someplace more pleasant for my meals.

| prejzki's Full Review: Suppenkuche |
Ate here with a group of 6 friends on a Thursday night. Had a good time drinking beer and waiting for our party to arrive until the bartender told us that we were lucky it was a slow night because they should have given away our table by now. Sufficiently chastened, we took our table and ordered while we waited for our last straggler. The seating is austere, and I felt sorry for the older couple enjoying a quiet meal at a large table because they sat our group right at the same table with them. We weren't particularly raucous, but a group of 7 is by nature louder than 2. The food was not cheap but tasted very good; however, my roast pork consisted of about 50% pure fat and it was too dark in the restaurant to dissect it out while I was eating. My friends' entrees were all fantastic: potato latkes, weinerschnitzel, jaegerschnitzel, saurkraut, potato salad, beet salad - all great. Unfortunately, the staff was extremely rude. Despite the 18% tip on parties of 6 or more, and the fact that we were enjoying after-dinner drinks, we were very snippily told "you know, there are people waiting for this table" as we were paying our bill. The attitude was definitely not one of customer appreciation, but that we should have been glad to have the opportunity to part with our money for their food. The decor is disturbingly simple - as if they don't care enough to put any effort into it, but they'll try to pass it off as "elegant" perhaps; then what's with the tacky Japanese parasols inexplicably hanging from the ceiling? I don't care for the noise and table-sharing concept unless I'm at a beerhall, pizza parlor, hibachi or someplace with a more festive attitude. Paying top dollar and enduring waitstaff with attitude usually earn me a private table at the least. It wasn't a purely terrible experience, but there are plenty of restaurants in SF with equally good food, and better atmosphere and service. I don't know whether I'll bother going back to Suppenkuche. I'm still trying to get the splinter out of my finger from some elegantly unfinished wood surface in their bar.

Notes, Tips or Menu Recommendations Don't tick off the staff and you'll have a good time. The roast pork requires a good eye to detect the meat within the fat in low light. Everything else tasted great. Best Suited For: Trendy Crowd
