About 3 years ago my husband and I decided to get away for the weekend to celebrate our anniversary. For something different we decided to go dining and dancing in Manhattan. We had heard about a couple of great supper clubs in New York.
I made reservations for the Supper Club about 6 weeks in advance, which I strongly recommend. (We tried the Rainbow Room first but they were already booked solid.) We decided not to do the early evening theater dinner reservations. (You can get some great specials if you take an early meal before attending the theater.) We decided on an early performance of Forever Tango at the Walter Kerr theater instead, and then an evening of food, wine, and dancing at the Supper Club. If you wish to take part in the dancing as well, you need to notify them in advance, since there is an additional charge for dancing. At that time it was $25.00 per person.
Our dinner reservations were for 7:30 pm. As we arrived a few minutes early we could see the theater crowd leaving in their formal gowns and tuxedos. I recommend a cocktail dress for a woman and a suit for a man for the evening meal. (A tuxedo would not be out of place.) The decor was beautiful, a stylish Art Deco reminiscent of the 40's which appealed to us.
We were seated within 5 minutes of our arrival and someone was attending to our needs in less time than that. We had predinner cocktails while perusing the menu. The drinks arrived within 10 minutes and then the waiter reviewed the evenings selections.
We ordered appetizers and another drink before dinner. There was a slight problem with one of the drinks--before you could blink it was replaced by a fresh one. No arguments, no charges, nothing.
The appetizers were fresh and delicious. My husband had shrimp while I enjoyed a vegetable combination. We were not rushed, we spent about 20 minutes chatting and enjoying the appetizers. While we enjoying our appetizers, a girl came to the table. She was wearing a blouse with a short skirt and heels. She was also carrying a camera, asking if you would like to have your photograph taken (just like the supper clubs in the 40's). At $10.00 a picture--not unreasonable--we decided to go for it as a souvenir of our anniversary week-end in Manhattan. The picture was ready within 2 minutes for you to take home with you.
The menu was nouveau cuisine with some standard favorites. We ordered dinner and wine. My husband enjoyed Prime rib while I savored a tenderloin. The meat was tender, flavorful and prepared the way we prefered it--rare. The presentation was artistic and the portions reasonable, a truly enjoyable meal.
While we were dining, we could see the band setting up. It was a terrific swing band and by the time we finished eating, the music had already begun. We decided to hit the dance floor and dance, dance, dance. While we dancing, the waitstaff removed the remnants from dinner. They also set up a soft light on the table, giving it a romantic ambiance. We later ordered dessert, a creamy, rich, decadent, chocolate creation, that seem to disappear within 5 minutes.
Since we had made dance reservations, it was not unexpected that we would remain after dinner and dance. The band played some of the greatest swing favorites from the 40's and 50's as well as a few latin numbers. We danced the night away. It was wonderful. The staff was unobtrusive and attentive for the remainder of the evening. We ordered drinks and danced until 11:30 pm.
The total for the evening of fabulous food, great company and a wonderful time was about $275.00. I would highly recommend it for those who enjoy a romantic dinner with some great music and dancing.
