Pros:Haven't found many, will try some of the recipes again that did not turn out.
Cons:I found many delicious recipes I will continue to use.
The Bottom Line: This book is a wealth of information good for your health. It is a different way of combining foods that will let you eat foods you never dreamed possible.
Trying to organize my life after Bills death and over a year of sampling hospital cafeteria food I needed to return to healthful eating. I have been on Suzanne Somers diet plan before and had ordered her new book using a gift certificate to Amazon.com. This book SUZANNE SOMERS FAST AND EASY has lain on my shelf for the past three months, until I decided I needed to check out her new recipes. I have all her other books and always enjoyed the structure of her books. She explains completely just how her diet works on your body, giving you more energy and includes many helpful and delicious recipes.

I enjoy the way her books are organized into complete description of what Somersizing is supposed to do to your body. She gives readable and easy explanations of how her diet plan will work, she does not call it a diet but it is a way of eating. In her introduction she writes: Welcome to the world of Somersizing. Your life is about to change. Your body is on its way to its ideal weight. Your taste buds will dance with glee. Your health will improve. And you are going to have a great time doing it. I can fully agree as I have been on her plan before but it was hard to follow on Cafeteria food and eating at odd hours or not at all. It seems Hospitals and Doctors have yet to agree that this is a way to a proper diet. I have read recently that they are beginning to say that the Dr. Adkins may not be too far off on his way of eating fats and cutting out sugar and carbohydrates.
I have also tried Dr. Adkins diet and found it harder to follow than Suzanne Somers plan. She stresses that you should have your carbohydrates and fats but never put them together in one meal. Dr. Adkins does not include fruits and this is one area I could not live without. Now on Suzannes plan you can have fruits but when you have them, wait at least 20 minutes or more before eating either a carbohydrates meal or fat/protein meal. She stresses to stay away from white sugar, white flour and starches, or any products that include them. She calls them Funky Foods and she gives a list of those to delete from your diet. Her easy steps to follow are listed in seven ways to Somersize.
1.Eliminate all Funky Foods.
2.Eat fruit alone, on an empty stomach: twenty minutes before a Carbos meal, one hour before a Pro/Fats meal, and two hours after your last meal.
3.Eat Pro/Fats with Veggies
4.Eat Carbos with Veggies
5.Keep Pro/Fats separate from Carbos.
6.Wait three hours between meals if switching from a Pro/Fats meal to a Carbo meal, or vice versa.
7.Do not skip meals. Eat at least three meals a day, and until you feel satisfied and comfortably full.
Suzanne calls white refined sugar the number one enemy to your body. Since many people love their sweets it may be the hardest to give up. There is a way with Suzannes plan as she has developed a sweetener that can be used in most desserts and baking. She has this available on her Web site, www.suzannesomers.com that one can order. She give many ways to use this sweetener for all those sweet tooth hungry eaters, she includes herself in this category. She developed this sweetener as many sweeteners on our grocery shelf today include a chemical that should be avoided. I have used Splenda and it is available at your grocery and does work in baking as well.
There is a forward in this book SUZANNE SOMERS FAST AND EASY written by Michael Galitzer. M. D. give Suzanne Somers credit in this book by giving an incredible amount of information that is both scientifically based and medically correct. When we have great choices in our food we are more enthusiastic about life, we begin to feel good and look better. This forward was informative and mentioned that we eat too many foods that are processed and full of preservatives. Dr. Galitzer says when processed foods are consumed on a regular basis that over time they will interfere with organ functions that causes fatigue, insomnia and irritability. He says that being healthy is more than being disease free but having physical energy and emotional balance.
Suzanne Somers book is filled with good suggestion and explanations from the first part through to the recipe section. The first section explains the process in eight chapters you will be informed of how this plan works. In the second part she lists in six chapters the program, the different levels of eating, tips on meals, frequently asked question to her web site, to products and foods to help you lose weight. In the third section the Somersize recipes followed my medical studies, reference guide, bibliography and index. This book SUZANNE SOMERS FAST AND EASY is full of useful information in 330 pages, published in 2002 by Crown Publishers, New York.
I have always enjoyed the format of Suzannes books they include the most wonderful section of color pictures of the recipes included. They make you want to try those recipes, Suzanne and some of her family members are usually included in these pictures. I also enjoy the art sketches that are included in many of the pages, it adds so much to the book, and I understand that her daughter-in-law is the artist. Suzanne also includes some before and after pictures that people have sent to her with a story of their success on this Somersizing plan. With all the extras it makes a very enjoyable book.
Now to the Somersize recipe section, they are labeled Breakfast, Appetizers and Snacks, Soups, Salads, Vegetable Dishes, Hometown Favorites, Poultry, Beef, Pork, Seafood and Desserts with 117 different recipes. I have tried many and will include the ones I have used successfully. There are a few that did not turn out like she suggested but maybe I did not follow the direction completely. There were only a few I tried where I failed and some are, the Cinnamon Bread, I will try that one again. Another was the California Tater Tots, they did not bake up in the form of Tater Tots, but the recipe was delicious and I used it as a form of mashed potatoes, these were made with mashed cauliflower. Sommersize Bake and Fry Mix (mine would burn-must try again).
Some of my successful recipes are Sweet Orange Cream Cheese Spread, Cucumber Dill Dip (I added Horseradish-my favorite), Eight Minute Creamy Tomato Soup (delicious will make often), Tomato and Cucumber Salad with Feta Vinaigrette (I used crumbled blue cheese with Balsamic dressing-Good), Zucchini Noodle Alfredo (noodles are long zucchini strips), Somersize Double Double Cheeseburgers (these are wrapped in a lettuce leaves instead of a bun, a little messy but good), Somersize Ketchup (Excellent I add other spices then use it in pizza, whole wheat pasta etc.), my favorite of all so far is the Salmon Baked in Parchment (delicious I serve it with Asparagus and the mashed cauliflower along with Tomato and Cucumber Salad). I will be trying more as many of these recipes are quick and easy to prepare.
I have my own dessert recipe that won Honorable Mention in Suzanne Somers Recipe Contest two years ago. She published all the winners and honorable mention recipes in a book that can be purchased on her web site www.suzannesomers.com. My recipe TRUFFLES CHEESECAKE SUPREME is on the last pages of this book. This book is called Suzanne Somers Somersize Recipe Contest Cookbook with 60 recipes included from the winners.
Since I started back on Somersizing I have lost seven pounds, am feeling great, have plenty of energy and started playing golf again. As I have always said throughout Bills illnesses I am taking it one day at a time. Life goes on and I am thankful for my family and friends who have supported me through this past year. LIFE IS FULL OF SURPRISES YOUR HEALTH IS YOUR WEALTH, PRESERVE IT!!
