I have been using cloth diapers for quite some time now. When my oldest son, Andrew, was born, I used the old fashioned diaper service diapers, pins and plastic pants. It was all I knew, and these diapers served us well. Since I used a diaper service though, it was expensive, and I had dirty cloth diapers sitting around my house for a week at a time.
When my second son, William, was born, we used disposables. We would be moving three times in his first year of life, and I still only knew of a diaper service being an option, and did not want to have to pay the new client fee for the first month of each service we would need to use. Poor William suffered with the numerous diaper rashes that are common for my children when exposed to disposable diapers of any brand.
When I became pregnant with my son Owen, I discovered the wide and varied world of specialty cloth diapers sold online through work at home moms (WAHMs) that work very hard at developing innovative, effective, and adorable cloth diapers.
Suzie Christensen is one of these innovative WAHMs. She has developed a wonderful fitted cloth diaper designed to be worn under a waterproof cover called the Suzie’s One Size or SOS diaper. his is a wonderful diaper which, depending on the diaper ordered can be made from a variety of absorbent materials. I have a variety, ranging from adorable print outers, to super absorbent hemp terry cloth outers. They all have an absorbent inner core, and a variety of coordinating linings, or inner fabrics (my favorite being a super soft velour inner fabric in coordinating colors).
What makes this a one size fitted diaper is the fastening system. Unlike traditional diaper service diapers which fasten with pins, the SOS diaper is fitted (meaning it is shaped much like a disposable diaper with elastic around the legs and waist) and fastens with a series of nylon snaps. There are two rows of snaps. For a smaller baby, starting around 8 pounds (though these tend to fit a 10 pound baby better) the top row of snaps is folded under and snapped down in place, making the rise of the diaper shorter. Then the sides (or wings) of the diaper are folded over the diaper and crossed in front and snapped in place. A waterproof diaper cover (purchased separately) is placed over the diaper to keep wetness away from baby’s clothing.
As for fit, i have been very pleased so far with this diaper. I started using a SOS diaper on Owen when he was about 10 pounds, he is 15 pounds now and he still wears the diaper on one of the smallest settings--so we have a lot of wear out of these left.
These are impeccably sewn diapers, Suzie is a wonderful seamstress and finds the cutest fabrics to make these diapers out of. They also hold up well over time, I have bought some used SOS diapers from an online friend and they still have a lot of life left in them, even after being used for quite some time.
As for absorbency, they are very absorbent. I have 12 of these diapers and absorbency varies between the diapers, depending on which fabrics are used in the diaper. But all absorb as well or better than a disposable diaper. I also have never had a problem with poop getting out of the diaper and either down the leg or up the back as I have often had with disposable diapers.
All in all, this is one of my favorite cloth diapers. For more information on these diapers and to order custom made diapers from Suzie, check out her web site at www.sosdiapers.com . This site also shows some of her companion products, such as liners, doublers and covers. If you want to be able to order a diaper right away, check out her in stock store at SOS.ewahm.com . The only problem is that the in stock diapers seem to get snatched up as quickly as Suzie posts them, but you may get lucky!
Enjoy! And happy diapering!
