The Swiffer WetJet... I like the ads better than the product

Pros:Convenient, easy to use, and safe for most floors.

Cons:Expensive.  Not particularly green.

The Bottom Line: I would give this product more stars if I didn't have to repeatedly buy pads and detergent.

My husband Bill and I just moved from Georgia to North Carolina.  As we were preparing to move, I stocked up on cleaning supplies.  The Swiffer WetJet was one product I had always been curious about, so I picked up a kit to use in our cleaning arsenal.  Realizing that our kitchen floor was pretty filthy, I also grabbed an extra box of cleaning pads.

What's in the box?

For about twenty bucks, you get a sweeper, a bottle of all-purpose cleaning solution, and two cleaning pads.  Not included are the two double A batteries that are needed to operate the sprayer.

Putting the WetJet together

Having had the pleasure of using several Swiffer products, I was already somewhat familiar with the way Swiffer sweepers fit together.  The WetJet sweeper has aluminum parts that easily fit together and lock with plastic buttons that fit into aluminum holes.  The base of the WetJet has velcro strips where disposable pads can adhere.  A bottle of cleaning solution snaps into a receptacle on the sweeper.

Using the WetJet

The Swiffer WetJet is easy enough to use.  Just press the button and the cleaner shoots out of the WetJet.  It kind of reminds me of the window washer on a car.  Then you mop over the wet area.  When the pad on the Swiffer gets really dirty, just peel it off and throw it away.  Replace it with a fresh pad.

My experiences

I find the Swiffer WetJet easy to use and basically effective.  However, I do think there's a fair amount of expense that goes into using the WetJet as opposed to a regular mop.  You have to buy the detergent, the pads (and you will want to buy a refill package from the get-go), and batteries.  The pads get dirty quickly, so you go through them quickly.  The detergent isn't the most effective I've ever used and I go through it quickly, which means I have to buy more.  On the other hand, I have read that some people have found reusable pads at their grocery stores and have figured out a way to use a different detergent.

The Swiffer WetJet is kind of a neat gadget and heaven knows I like the idea of a gadget that can make cleaning floors easier and more fun.  But I don't like the idea of having to keep buying refills and supplies.  Even if I don't consider the extra expense involved, there's the fact that those unrefillable bottles and disposable cleaning pads will eventually end up in a landfill.

That being said, I can understand why this Swiffer product and so many others have been popular with Americans.  I'll probably use mine for awhile, since we now have a linoleum floor.  Swiffer WetJet detergent is safe for most floor types, by the way.  I haven't had any problems using it on linoleum, terra cotta, or wood surfaces.

I think the Swiffer WetJet is a decent bet for those who like gadgets that are convenient, even though it may not be so convenient to have to buy batteries, pads, and detergent all the time.  For others, the WetJet may be a bit frivolous.  However, I do like the Swiffer ads that are on TV right now.  I know I'm an odd duck.
