fostrmom2mny's Full Review: Swing Away Can Opener with Ergonomic Handle
Our family went thru so many electric can openers that I've lost count. Many have features that I really loved, but they just didn't seem to last much more than a year. (Some not even that long!) I gave up! I went back to the old fashioned hand held types with the two handles that you squeeze together and the rim of the can is cut between the white plastic wheel and the blade. I was equally disappointed in these as they just wouldn't work correctly. I even bought the real old fashioned type, like the one's in the Tom and Jerry cartoons. They worked, but the lid would be so sharp, I worried that someone might get cut on them.
I went to a Kitchen Specialty store where I found a Swing-A-Way hand held brand. It has two wider handles that are coated in white plastic which makes it easier to grip. The wheel and cutting blade are both made from metal as is the twist/turn mechanism. Although this is not electric, I prefer this over the electric brands. It's easy, quick, dishwasher safe, and was priced at under $5.00.
I'm a foster parent and I have children that help out in the kitchen. One of my daughters have very weak wrists, but she can manipulate this can opener without any problems. We've owned this can opener for over two years and it has already outlived the electric can openers by two times and outlived other hand held can openers by at least four times.
I would highly recommend the Swing-A-Way can opener to all households and even to restaurants for it is easy to use, dependable, and a price that's right.
Although I purchased mine at a Kitchen Specialty store, I have seen them also at discount stores such as Wal-Mart.
