| lyagushka's Full Review: Swing-Away White Can Opener |
How many times have you cursed your can opener? I've gone through can openers the way some people go through underwear. Yes, I've tried them all, from the ugly, el cheapo variety to the ultramodern, ergonomic nouvelle wazoo. None of them were comfortable to use or highly reliable. Until I met this can opener.
It's appearance is no-nonsense and sturdy-looking. Yet the product packaging had a little note on it that said it was tested and approved by NASA. Approved by NASA? Those empirical science folks who shoot their fellow human beings into space? The ones who accept less than a 1/10 of 1 percent failure rate for everything they do? Well that was quite a selling point. Needless to say I snapped that can opener right off the shelf and brought it home. (After paying for it, of course. I seem to recall it was a little pricey, around $13US.)
Canned tomatoes, coconut milk, canned tuna in oil. Nothing was safe on my shelves. I was stunned, speechless. It brought tears to my eyes. (Okay, maybe this is a little bit of hyperbole - bear with me.) This was the holy grail of can openers. Its grip was powerful, its rotation smooth and sure. It couldn't be improved. I rummaged through my kitchen drawers and threw out three can openers and put three others in the 'garage sale' pile.
That was more than a year ago. What can I say? This is the best can opener I've ever had. It's sturdy but not too heavy. I put it through the dishwasher and it refuses to rust. The long turning handle means very little force is needed to make the can rotate under the cutting wheels. It has never let me down, never twisted itself off of the lip of a can as I tried to open it. It has never released the can before I intended to.
If you're sick of your stupid can opener or need to make your first can opener purchase, this product will not disappoint you. It's ease of use would make it especially nice for those with arthritis or carpal tunnel syndrome. I recommend it without reservation.
