| soothsayer's Full Review: Swing-Away White Can Opener |
The Swing-A-Way is a pretty good can opener that can open cans with not too much effort.
The can opener is made entirely of steel with thermoplastic molded around the handles for grip. The plastic is slightly rubber-like and cannot be destroyed unless you take a flame to it. The can opener is also well-balanced, and feels like a real tool in your hands, not some cheap knock off that will break down later requiring you to buy another one. The design of the Swing-A-Way is also nice.
Opening cans with this can opener is easy. However, only round cans can be opened with ease; oval, and square cans required cutting along on the straight edges before chopping away at the corners, but that may be true of most can openers.
Cleaning this can opener is a problem. You will find a lot of gunk building up behind the sharp metal cutting disc. Also, the space in between the two halves of the can opener can attract a lot of grease that is hard to clean away unless you soak the can opener for a long time. If you do not clean it, the drying gunk builds up friction and you need to exert more energy opening a can; this can strain your hand.
Another downside is the so-so ergonomics. The can opener is great for normal people, but, not for folks with hand problems. The turn knob thingee allows only the thumb and index finger knuckle to rest on it, and thus do all of the work.
Despite the minor problems, the Swing-A-Way can opener is a great can opener. It will last you through many nuclear winters in your fallout shelter, and it is also bomb-proof; I have not tested it with real bombs, but take my word for it, it will last forever.
