Pros: solid construction, rubber non-skid footing, takes standard size staples, may misfire but no jamming
Cons: heavy; not designed to hold in the hand for long-term stapling
The Bottom Line: The Bottom Line is stapling in style. It likes the retro look ... plus it thinks this stapler would make a fine self-defense device. I think karate might work better.

| dlstewart's Full Review: Swingline 747 Full-Strip Classic Plus Desktop S707... |
I have been working on a project where I havent been at my desk. So I have been using a coworkers Swingline 747 Classic Plus Stapler. Its fun trying new products and finding out whether they are better than what Im using.
Description
This metal stapler looks retro. It immediately grabbed my attention with the ooooohhh factor. Its beautiful with curved lines, melding grace with function. Granted, some people may not care for the gunmetal gray color, but it really looks nice, especially with the silver-colored oval metal Swingline logo recessed into the top of the stapler. The manufacturer states that this stapler is an all-metal design with die-cast base construction. The exterior of the stapler is smooth to the touch with no sharp corners.
The stapler measures 7 1/4" long x 1 3/4" wide. There is a 1/2" opening between the base plate and the staple holder. The throat is 3 3/4" long should you need to staple deeply into a document. If you need to, this stapler fully opens so that it can be used to tack items to a bulletin board or other surface. Another attractive feature is that this stapler takes a full strip of standard staples. The bottom of the stapler has a piece of ridged rubber that runs the length of the stapler.
Heavy. Yes, this is a very heavy stapler. I lifted the plastic Swingline (Model # 818) stapler from my desk and then the metal Swingline (Model # 747) stapler. There is a huge weight difference. The metal stapler has to weigh at least two pounds.
The Swingline 747 Classic Stapler is available in several colors, too. Your choices are: Silver, Gunmetal Gray, Black, Beige and Maroon.
My Experiences
I do not consider this a hand stapler ... meaning that it is heavy and awkward to hold in one hand. I have held it one-handed and stapled up to five sheets of paper. But the staple tends to misfire when stapling this way. I prefer leaving the stapler on the desk and pressing down on the top of the stapler to staple papers. The rubber footing also keeps the stapler anchored in position on the desk.
There is a locking mechanism located on the bottom of the stapler to keep the stapler top from swinging all the way open. Press the metal lever on the bottom of the stapler to release the lock. The stapler then opens so that it will lay flat on the desk (12 3/4" long). It is easy to use the stapler this way to tack papers to a bulletin board. Just close the stapler to automatically engage the lock.
Should a staple misfire, it is easy to clear the stapler. Just pull the papers out of the stapler and press down on the stapler. The misfired staple is ejected. The manufacturer states that the spring-loaded inner chamber prevents jams. For the most part this is true. The stapler does not jam (meaning that the staple becomes stuck in the stapler). However, sometimes the staple does not complete its stapling mission and needs to be expelled from the stapler as I mentioned above.
The manufacturer says this stapler will staple up to 20 sheets of 20-pound paper. This stapler treats 20 sheets of paper like (excuse the cliche) a hot knife cutting through butter. A bit more leverage is needed, but this stapler can easily staple up to 25 sheets of paper. It will not staple 30 sheets.
There is an area along the side of the stapler where the staples near the stapling mechanism are visible. This is great for keeping track of when the staples are running low.
It is easy to replace the staples in this stapler. The top of the stapler lifts to reveal the cavity where the staples are slid into place. Engraved into the metal where the staples are positioned are the words: Use Genuine #4 Swingline 100% Round Wire Staples for the Best Performance. (I fill the stapler with Swingline S.F. 4 Premium Staples. My coworker uses whatever staples are at hand.) The top of this stapler locks firmly in place and requires a good tug to open it.
Purchasing
The office supply buyer purchased this stapler for $14.85 from Staples. They offer a variety of colors, too. There is also a special edition chrome version of this stapler that Staples offers for $17.55.
Summary
I like the Swingline 747 Classic Plus Stapler. The big downside is that it is heavy, but Im using it on the desk for the project I am doing (rarely holding it in my hand). Staples do not jam, though they might misfire if stapling through too thick a stack of paper. All in all, this stapler does its job with style. I like it better than the Swingline model stapler on my desk, so my coworker had better keep an eye on her stapler! Hmmmmm ... maybe shell trade.
I hope you have found this review useful.
