| dlstewart's Full Review: Swingline High-Powered Portable Electric Stapler |
Im jealous. My co-worker has a Swingline Portable Electric Stapler on her desk. The good news is that she shares!
Description
This stapler has a small footprint of 7 x 1 3/4 and stands about 2 5/8 high. It has a throat depth of 1 1/2 and holds a standard strip of 210 staples. The stapler has a sleek modern design that fits in well on the desk. It also has a low profile, so its not in-your-face noticeable.
The stapler body is black plastic with a few red plastic pieces (the throat depth guide, the button at the back of the stapler that releases the staple drawer, and a red piece of plastic marks the front of the staple drawer). There are two long narrow rubber feet on the bottom of the stapler for traction.
Either plug the stapler adapter into an AC wall outlet, or insert 6 AA alkaline batteries into it. It comes with a 2-year warranty.
Setting Up & Loading the Stapler
This is a very easy electric stapler to use. It comes with an AC adapter to plug into the wall. It also has the option of using 6 AA batteries. To insert the batteries, a panel slides open on the bottom of the stapler. The six batteries are inserted here and there is even a convenient diagram showing in which direction the batteries should face.
There is also an adjustable 1 1/2 throat depth. There are two red plastic tabs on each side of the stapler head. Using one hand, position your thumb on one tab and your index finger on the other red tab. Press the tabs toward each other to adjust the throat depth measurement (sliding the tabs back and forth along the stapler head).
Loading the stapler is also easy. Push the large red button (marked PUSH) on the back end of the stapler. The staple drawer slides out the front end of the stapler. Just place a strip of staples on the rail and slide the drawer shut. You are ready to staple!
My Experiences
This is a nifty stapler, and my co-worker had better take inventory of it each day to make sure it doesnt migrate to my desk. I can see why she has possession of it, though. Her job requires that she staple lots and lots of papers. Every day this stapler sees a workout, and it has rarely caused a problem.
I enjoy that the stapler sits on the desk and virtually does the stapling for me. It handles up to 20 sheets of 20-pound paper. It has been in use for two to three years and hardly ever misfires. Its so easy to use. I tap my sheets of paper on the desk to align them, then I insert the pages into the stapler. Snap! The stapler automatically senses the papers are in the correct position and staples them.
If I want to adjust where the staple falls on the paper, it is easy to change the throat depth of the stapler. There is a sensing mechanism in the stapler so that the stapler consistently staples at the same position. The staple opening is narrow, too, and set back a bit from the edge of the stapler. This is a great safety precaution. There is no way anyone in this office can accidentally staple their finger.
We have a variety of paper weights in the office, too, and this stapler handles everything we throw at it (though I never staple more than 20 sheets at a time). Some of the paper comes from multi-part forms; other sheets are from letters received in the mail. Most of the stapling I do involves computer printouts, whether on 20-pound copy paper or four-part forms.
We have this stapler plugged into the wall near the desk. I think my co-worker is afraid to place batteries in it since that would make it more portable (right onto my desk). Without batteries, the stapler is lightweight and easy to move in case more desk space is needed to spread out papers.
Electric vs. Manual
Is this electric stapler better than a manual stapler? That depends on the stapling job. I prefer carrying a manual stapler around from one office area to another. However, when it comes to stapling stacks of papers (one stack right after the other), this electric stapler makes the job go quicker. If I am sitting at the desk, it is simple to slide the stack of papers into the electric stapler
and easier on the hands. No pain here!
Purchasing
This electric stapler has a list price of $65.85. Definitely shop around for the best price. We bought ours at Staples where it is currently selling for $38.85.
The manufacturer recommends using Swingline SF4 Premium Staples in this machine. We use Swingline standard staples and have had no problem.
Summary
I am definitely glad that we have this Swingline Portable Electric Stapler. It makes life a bit easier having an automatic stapler
and its fast. I know my co-worker threatens me every time I make the suggestion that Id be happy to use some of my desk space for the stapler if she is running out of room on hers. Im putting this stapler on my wish list.
I hope you found this review useful.
Enjoy your day,
