Dora the Explorer and Boots Say Swiper, No Swiping!
Written: Nov 24 '03
Pros:fun recording & playing back child's voice, easy to read
Cons:none
The Bottom Line: This book would be fun for your child. They will learn 7 Spanish words and have a blast recording their own voice.
It was time to do my son Allen's birthday shopping and I spotted this book. He enjoys watching Dora the Explorer so much on television that I thought this would be a really neat book for him. We had his 3rd birthday party a week early so he now has his book. It is a big hit at our house.
About the Book:
The book itself is 12 pages. It is a board book so the pages are very hard. This will keep it from getting torn. In the top right corner of the book is a tape recorder. You can record your voice and play it back. Throughout the book you will see red dots and blue dots. When you see a red dot you push the red dot on the record and it will record the word you are supposed to say. Then when you see a blue dot in the book you push the blue button. It will then play back for you the word. This is great for reinforcing what the child is learning.
Swiper, No Swiping! is written by Chris Gifford and is illustrated by Jason Fruchter. It is based on the TV series, Dora the Explorer as seen on Nick Jr.
The Story:
Dora is a little girl who can speak both English and Spanish. She has a friend that is a monkey named Boots. He is with her throughout the book. They have a friend, Tico, who is a squirrel. Dora and Boots are bringing Tico a present.
On one page everything from Dora's backpack is out. There are a variety of presents and the child must pick the red item. They also learn the Spanish word for red, which is rojo.
They must watch out for Swiper who will try to steal the present away. The child must say Swiper, no swiping! three times to stop him.
They find their friend, Tico, in the Nutty Forest and give him their gift. He needs to watch out for Swiper though.
Tico has his gift and once again, Swiper is stopped. He says his familiar phrase "Oh mannn!" He always says that when stopped.
The book ends with Dora and Boots telling Tico good-bye by saying adios.
What Spanish Words Your Child Will Learn From the Book:
Hello - Hola
Red - Rojo
Let's Go - Vamonos
Thank You - Gracias
You're Welcome - De nada
Watch Out - Cuidado
Good-bye - Adios
Warning Information:
This book is intended for children age 3 and up. It has a choking hazard because of small parts. The unit requires three 1.5V batteries which should only be replaced by an adult. It does come with the batteries in it. There is a small screw to be unscrewed when replacing batteries.
The Illustrations:
The pictures in the book look exactly like the characters on the TV show. The setting of the book is outside. There are pictures and writing on every page of the book. There is lots of scenery included in the book such as: flowers, trees, grass and acorns. The pictures are fun to look at and the characters all seem happy except for Swiper. For the most part there are smiles on the faces of Dora, Boots and Tico. There are a wide variety of colors used in the book.
What we think about the book:
Allen really loves to have books read to him and this one was no exception. He had an especially fun time because the book gets the child so involved in the book. Throughout the book there are 13 times that your child must record their own voice and play it back. I love that Allen is learning some Spanish words and it is made fun for him.
Swiper, No Swiping! is constantly asking questions that the child must answer. This is great for making the child think and really get into the book. An example of this is when they are talking about Swiper. It says "But who do we have to watch out for?". Allen did a great job of answering the questions.
Allen is a week away from being 3. He could not do the recording by himself. He tried but could not figure out how to do it correctly. I had to tell him the word to say and then push the proper buttons to record and then play back.
My older son, Aaron, who is 9 also enjoyed the book. He read it also and had fun recording his voice and playing it back. It was also good for him to learn some of the Spanish words. He already knew most of them, but not all. I would say the book is primarily for ages 3-7, but an older child could enjoy it also. I love that my children were exposed to 7 Spanish words. That is great!
Here is another Dora the Explorer book that we enjoyed:
