everlasting18's Full Review: Sylvania LC420SS8 42 in. TV
Now I can't say this is my first HD purchase when it comes to televisions but still it is my first step into full definition, and yes I'm talkin' 1080p.
I'll start by filling in the non techno's out there 1080p(progressive) is at this time the highest resolution tv you can get, from there down the listing goes 1080i(interlaced), 720p(progressive), 720i(interlaced), as far as your standard def you've got 480i(interlaced). There is some obvious differences and some not so obvious ones. First some obvious things, the picture is amazing when compared to a standard def set. That is of course you've got the right signal going into it. This brings me to a not so obvious difference, when it comes to the old crt(cathode ray tube) sets they were designed with analog in mind, now I won't go too deep into this part seeing as how it's not that relavent but you've probably heard this thing called the digital transition, this is what the new flat panel sets are being based on, so hence high def(HD) on a standard def(SD) tv isn't going to work, and vice a versa, yes an HD set will show a SD signal it'll look really blocky and just plain painful to watch.
Now back the the tv, it's of course a sylvania 42 inch Full HD1080p. The reason for purchase is I got it really cheap from sears, it was one of their floor models and it had been knocked down to 650 bucks which I thought was a really good deal. There was no scratches on the screen, there were some finger prints on it but they wiped away easy enough. The overall aesthestics of the tv are about an 8 out of 10. Black and silver seems to be the choice of many electronics so it works with most setups, except of course the xbox which just has to be a f'd up color of white but what can you do.
When it comes to inputs there's your average selection nothing too over the top, 2 HDMI's, 2 component's, 1 pc input, 2 rca inputs along with an s-video inpute, and of course the old school coax. Audio outputs are just your standard rca white and red I believe.
When it comes to sound the tv actually sounds pretty good, this is of course based on my limited experience when it comes to flat panels but every one I've ever heard always seems to sound tinny and just flat, but the sylvania can actually pull a little bit of bass with 10watts to each speaker it does perfectly well as a do fer til you can afford a surround sound system.
The contrast isn't bad, the blacks could really be deeper but thats a problem that plauges most lcd tv's unlike plasma's and I'm saying this now thats one argument I will not get into so I'm gonna stop there. The brightness on the other hand is nice and crisp, not at all cartoony, though grass on certain movies looks nearly as bright as neon lights that could just be the quality of the dvd player i'm using. Sharpness also great, nice sharp lines nearly make your eyes water this is where I'm glad I opted for the 1080p, and being in the position I'm in I've seen the 360 on both the 720p and the 1080p along with 1080i on another tv, and you can tell a difference maybe not with a satellite signal or a movie but when it comes to games and the pc input it shows, movement doesn't blur so bad and the pc images are much more precise you could literally double this thing as your pc monitor if you wanted to in fact thats half this panels job as it stands.
The remote that comes with the tv is kind of lame, not really anything that looks cutting edge or high tech, all the function buttons are tucked into the top half of the remote, whilst the rest of it is just shiny black plastic, it just feels really cheap.
Can't really comment on packaging as far as the box and styrofoam goes but the manual is easy to page through and set up of the tv is easy enough plug it in and turn it on thats about it.
Overall great tv if you can find this thing for under 900 bucks go for it you won't regret it.
