Craving some Chinese food? Szechuan Garden offers one of the best buffets in the area, along with regular sit-down and take-out service. The staff is friendly and attentive, service is quick, and food quality is excellent. Just about any fan of Chinese food will be pleased after a stop at Szechuan Garden.
Where is it?
Located in an older strip mall in the center of Medway that also includes an Ocean State Job Lot, a hardware store, a salon and a few other restaurants, Szechuan Garden is worth a stop for either lunch or dinner if you are traveling east or west on Route 109 in the Medway area.
Located at 106 Main Street in Medway, Massachusetts, Szechuan Garden is located directly off of Route 109 (Main Street) in a small strip mall/shopping center. The restaurant is located almost in the center of the mall.
There is ample free parking for the restaurant, though on busier nights, you may have to park some distance from the restaurant and walk over. However, Ive never seen the entire parking lot for the shopping center fill up.
When can I get my Chinese food fix?
Szechuan Garden is open for both lunch and dinner and also offers a Sunday brunch. Hours run from 11am to 9pm. The lunch and dinner buffet is available during lunch and dinnertime 12 to 2 and 5 to 8.
Buffet
The reason most people come to Szechuan Garden is for the buffet, which is arguable (at least in my opinion) one of the best buffets in the area. Not only is the food good, its kept fresh through the constant watchful eye of the staff who keep food in the buffet constantly refreshed so you never come across older food.
There are a few differences between the lunch and dinner buffets, but generally the same dishes are served for both. Theres always pork fried rice, chicken fingers, several different vegetable dishes, chicken and pork dishes and a few different desserts. The biggest difference between the two time frames is that the dinner buffet generally offers a larger selection of seafood dishes.
As part of the buffet, you also have your choice of soup to start your meal. The soup isnt served at the buffet, so you will have to ask for it when you sit down.
The waiters and waitresses are very attentive, keeping your water glasses full and making sure that any used plates are removed from your table. They also quickly bring any other drinks you may want, including alcoholic drinks from their full-service bar.
Sit down and take-out service
Much like the buffet service, you wont be let down by the regular menu dining options at Szechuan Garden either. They offer a wide selection of Chinese dishes from my favorite Chicken with Broccoli to others like Sesame Chicken and Mongolian Beef. There are also a number of different fried rice and low mein selection.
Combination lunches and dinners are also available that combine various entrees together so you dont have to buy full-sized portions of each individual entrée.
While Szechuan Garden doesnt offer delivery, their take-out service is quick. You shouldnt expect a wait of more than 15 minutes or so on most orders (unless its New Years Eve and then you better order first thing in the morning).
Like the service with the buffet, the waiters and waitresses are just as attentive for those who are sitting down for a regular menu meal. Service is fast and friendly and its the rare evening that it takes a long time to receive your meals after ordering.
The best time to go for sit down service? New Years Eve. You think Im joking? Everyone orders take-out and so while it might be hard to get into the restaurant because of the take-out line, once youre in, almost no one actually goes out and sits down to eat so you have the restaurant to yourself.
That said, almost anytime is a good time for Szechuan Garden. Its generally most full during Friday and Saturday night (there might be a bit of a wait at dinnertime), but Ive never had to wait more than about 15 minutes to get a table.
Cost
I would consider Szechuan Garden to have fair prices. The lunch buffet is $9.95 while the dinner buffet is $13.95. Dishes run anywhere from about $7 upwards to $15 depending upon what you are ordering and the combination meals are around $7 for lunch and about $10 for dinner.
Ambiance
Szechuan Garden is kept very clean, but overall isnt anything special inside. The restaurant is broken down into a front and back room, separated by a partial wall. The buffet is hosted in the front room. The rooms are decorated with a bit of Chinese art, along with a fall-wall mirror in the front room along one of the walls. Lighting is bright and there is faint music playing.
It can get loud inside the restaurant, especially during the busy times and while there is some distance between most seating, the tables are somewhat close together, especially in the back room.
Final Thoughts
When Im craving a Chinese buffet, Szechuan Garden is the first place I think of. Its got good food and great service, but most importantly for me, they really pride themselves on the quality of their food, especially in the buffet. They make sure only the freshest food is available and thats something I appreciate.
Its not only the buffet though, that service and quality is evident throughout the whole restaurant and its always a good experience for me there.
Overall it would be hard not to recommend Szechuan Garden for someone looking for Chinese food, whether they want a buffet or just want to order an entrée.
Many thanks to megugrrrl for adding this to the database for me.
