The Bottom Line: I find this to be a safe method to rid my plants from Japanese Beetles. A Great Investment to keep my Yard looking the way I designed it !
MississippiMom's Full Review: TANGLEFOOT COMPANY "XPANDO" JAPANESE BEETLE TRAP K...
What really BUGS me the most about all the time I put into my gardening is the fact that if I dont protect my plants from those pesky Japanese Beetles, my time and effort is worthless. There are a few methods you can use to protect your plants by using pesticides like sevens dust for one. Having a 1 year old granddaughter who is now mobile in the yard this was Not an option for us. The best method I had found was using Traps.
The first one I purchased was the Rescue disposable Trap bag. It worked great collecting all the Japanese Beetles, it filled up quickly and let me tell you once they die in the bag, the smell is almost unbearable. We were out searching for replacement bags when I had found the Tanglefoot Xpando Japanese Beetle Trap Kit at one of local garden nurseries.
The difference between the Tanglefoot and Rescue brand is the Tanglefoot is reusable year after year, the hard plastic trap doesnt need to be replaced. Over time the lure does lose its power to attract beetles, but I was told by the nursery who sold this product that the lure will last the entire season and if properly cared for and put away in our NY winters we could possibly get 2 years from the lure. He reassured me replacement lures were available.
As far as the Rescue brand you need to constantly replace the disposable bags each time you empty the bag. Besides I did notice a few holes in the bags were the beetles tried to eat their way out of it. With the Xpando, they cant eat through the plastic and you dont need to see the nasty Dead beetles. Besides I like it looks more like an ornament hanging under the tree in the yard compared to a see through bag of dead bugs.
Does it work? Absolutely, it works so well I think I have attracted every Japanese Beetle in my neighborhood. I cant even estimate how many we collect on a day to day basis.
One trap will cover approximately 50 feet of your yard, it is recommended to hang the traps at least 3 to 4 feet off the ground and away from your garden area close to the outer perimeter of your yard. I have purchased three of them one for the front of the yard and the other two for the back.
The kit included everything we needed to capture these pesky plant eating creatures. Assembly was quite easy, simply by snapping the pieces together and sliding the lure into the slot.
The entire trap is made of plastic. It is called the Xpando because the bottom of the trap expands like an accordion, the beetles are attracted to the floral and pheromone lure that lures them away from your plants, then fall into the trap. Once in the trap they cant get out until you empty the trap and dispose of these garden pests. To empty the bottom section of the trap I simply twist it off of the funnel and shake the beetles into a old plastic Folgers coffee canister filled with soapy water and dispose of them. If any are still alive, I found that they drown in the soapy water, so I usually dump them into my compost pile.
The hardest thing I found using this method was finding the best place to place it in the yard. I feel more at ease using this method over using insecticides having 4 Grandchildren. Seeing my roses bloom, my flowering plants with full healthy leaves instead of leaves that look like skeletons and petals covered in beetles as they mate together to produce even more for the following year.
I highly recommend using Tanglefoot Xpando Japanese Beetle Traps to keep these pesky critters off your plants. 5 Stars!!!
