QueenLyssa's Full Review: Croc 2 for PlayStation 1
With two girls who both love video games, I'm always shopping for games that promise plenty of playing time, so when Croc 2 caught my eye with its adorable hero, I figured it was worth the investment. For the first two levels I figured I had a winner, but after that it went all downhill.
This arcade game features Croc, an orphaned crocodile raised by cute little puffballs called Gobbos, on a search to find his long lost parents. His adventure is hindered, however, but the henchmen and monsters of his arch enemy, Baron Dante. Even the monsters in this one are so cute they're not horribly threatening.
The traditional format of arcade mazes is followed in this game, with Croc picking up coins and gems as well as puzzle pieces to open bonus levels while he saves kidnapped Gobbos in each level from the nasty henchmen. The game is broken into four villages of Gobbos with forty levels in all. In each village you will find a number of open levels that Croc can explore in any order. Completion of levels will open up a boss level where Croc must free the village from the main henchman attacking it before he can proceed to the next village. Solving extra puzzles in the open levels gives the player bonus levels. Supplies needed to complete levels can be purchased after gems are collected.
While the game format and cute characters are obviously targeted towards children, the mazes and jumps are almost impossible for kids to manage. On the other hand, the storyline and the ridiculous ease of defeating the bosses make this game a bit of a snore for advanced players who can manage the mazes. In other words, there's no audience who will get full enjoyment from this game. Little ones will be frustrated by it and anyone else will be bored no matter how cute the graphics are. Fox didn't seem to take the time to study their target group here and therefore missed altogether.
