Red Faction Guerilla, Open World Mayhem! THE BEST OPEN WORLD GAME AVAIBLE!

Written: Jul 21 '09 (Updated Aug 03 '09)
Pros:Very fun, tons you can do
Cons:Bad story
The Bottom Line: This is another great open world game that has much to offer. If you enjoy these kind of games this is recommended

Red Faction
Red Faction Guerrilla is a third person shooter and a open world game, you play as a guerrilla member. Basically a space knock off of the GTA series. Alec Mason is on a task to overthrow Earth Defense Force EDF on the planet Mars. Alec comes to Mars to meet up with his brother Daniel, later Alec finds out his brother has joined Red Faction a group of people that disagree with free labor that EDF is trying to in-force. Red Faction is on a mission to take down EDF and have a fair world to live in. The one flaw back's of this game is the weak Story, the only thing that keeps the game going are the fun missions, and the fact that RF is a open world game. Red Faction also has a great engine that allows smooth destruction. There is a lot of violence and action this Is not one of those take your sweet time games.

Graphics
One of the places that the graphics do well in is when you blow the living crap out of buildings. It's fun to watch a building blow up while fire and rubble is falling everywhere. The environment looks really nice, I think I really like how the terrain looks they did a good job. There is not just one or 2 shrubs here and there there is a real scenery. The details of buildings, explosions, and people look very good. The cinema clips are all right, but also needed more work done to it. So far I have not noticed any severe lagging of graphics, it seems to run smoothly. The rate at which things blow up is kind of realistic. The graphics are good but not the best out there however the graphics of buildings blowing up look very good. I would give Red Faction 8.5/10 for graphics. This is because there are better graphically made games but the buildings, well It's fun watching.

Sound
It's always fun hearing Lot's of mayhem and that is what this game provides Red Faction provides great sound as well. The sound track is not that bad It's not going to drive you nut's. There is a good environment sound for the time It's in. Buildings sound really cool blowing up, gunfire and explosions also sound really good. You can hear the sound of Tanks and Walkers very well. You can hear the vehicle moving as well as the mayhem going on outside. There is no lagging in the sound quality when you see stuff happening you hear it at the same time. Character voice expressions are alright, let's just say they don't always sound to convincing. Overall the sound for Red Faction is pretty good, there really Isn't anything to complain about. So I am going to give the Sound quality a 8/10, It's good but not the greatest.

Game play
Game play is pretty fun and easy once you get the hang of it. The funnest part of the game blowing up buildings. Buildings are easy to destroy you can destroy them by your Sledge War-hammer, Explosives, Vehicle's,pretty much anything that could hurt a building. Buildings drop salvage which is currency, I think this is the funnest way of getting rich. You don't have to smash every bit of the wall you just half to destroy the support beam's of the building. You can obtain currency through blowing the crap out of things, doing Missions, Side missions, exploring and many other ways. You can use currency for getting new Guns and Upgrading your older ones. You can Upgrade your weapons at  one of the Red Faction's Safe house's. You also have a GPS that has a short and large map. Your sledge will always be with you so you don't have to worry about that slot, This gives you 3 weapon slot's to go through and fill.

Combat
Combat is really fun as well the game runs smoothly but the AI can act kind of weird. Later in the game the AI pop up less often and in bigger force. It kind of made me feel like I was changing types of games. Start out thinking about your plan of action, end up just causing complete mayhem. They aren't as dumb as they look they can be very dangerous. Sometimes you will have to find some cover with your sledge. You can use the Sledge to break open a hole in a wall allowing you to escape to a place to regenerate your characters life. You can also use your hammer to scatter your enemies. Using it to cave in the building the enemy is in, this also scatters the enemy well in enclosed areas.

Gaining Sectors
The game may be a open world but you have to "unlock" the 6 sectors. You can cross these areas before claiming them but, you will die pretty quick by the EDF forces. You must take these areas over by doing missions and side jobs. Once the criteria for the area is met there will be one last mission. This is the final mission for the area, once you control a area you don't have to worry about the EDF annoying you. Now you have a new problem. Sometimes the EDF will bother your area's but, now you have to worry about the mutants. These start wondering around sometimes after you take a area over. There are 6 sectors in the game Parker, Dust, Oasis, Badlands, Free Fire Zone, EOS.

What Kind of things you can do
First I will start with the missions, of course there is the main story missions and there are side missions as well. The side missions vary from all sorts of action. Some of the side missions are taking control of sector's. There are destructive missions to, you get limited ammo and weapons to take down certain targets. There are Collateral missions, these involve you controlling a turret on a vehicle, you then must destroy a certain amount of enemy's these are fun but controlling your weapon on a vehicle can be fishy. There are lame missions as well. There is a transport mission which sucks, you must take a vehicle out on a run and bring it to a outpost of some sort under a certain time. I think there is no reason this kind of mission should be on this kind of a game. You can even do missions for hostage rescue, these are fun but can be very frustrating. There are some other side missions but what's the suspense if you know all of the game. You can pick up items from enemy's that you killed,or walk in someones place and steal their goods.

What I thought
I thought that Red Faction Guerilla was a very good game. I think the most fun I had was blowing up buildings, and doing whatever I wanted to do. Most of the missions were fun I think that I enjoyed the sector missions the most, even though most of the other missions were fun as well. But the transport mission, well that's a waist of time. The story needs more thought to it, It's a cool idea for a while but they kind of loose it. However these open world games are based on, to what you want, not the main story. It wasn't hard using the controller you'll get the hang of it in under a half hour. The vehicle controls are whack, they really made it a challenge to be good at shooting out of vehicles. It's also really fun just running around where ever you want to go. Maybe you want to kill and steal every ones stuff, or go on a random building rampage and get some money. I thought that the graphics, game play, and sound all work together smoothly, I haven't run into any bad glitches yet. But that doesn't mean someone else wont run into one.

Recommendations

Overall I thought this is a really good game. I recommend this game to those that like to steal, do random killing sprees, destroy towns, or all those other things that run with it. If you like First person space games this would be a good choice. If you like total mayhem and destruction this would be a very good choice. I also recommend this for those that are older. Younger children probably shouldn't be playing this game. If you don't like running around a lot in games you probably should avoid this. For those that don't like violence well, you should not even try this game out.
