Pros: Delivers fast relief, non-drowsy, citrus taste
Cons: No the cheapest brand on the market
For the last two weeks, I have been struggling with a particularly virulent summer cold and sinus infection. Due to the severity of the symptoms including nasal congestion, sore throat, and cough, I knew I would need some powerful multi-symptom relief. After carefully considering all of the cold and flu medication on the shelf at my local Wal-Mart, I decided on Tylenol Cold Multi-Symptom Severe Daytime Non-Drowsy caplets. While many other products offered basically the same primary ingredients, Tylenol is a brand I trust, and since I planned to continue working while taking this product, I chose the non-drowsy formula. While I cannot claim that this product cured my cold and sinus infections, it did provide sufficient temporary symptom relief to enable me to pretty much maintain my regular schedule during my recovery.
Tylenol products are manufactured by Mc Neil Laboratories, a division of Johnson & Johnson Healthcare products. Mc Neil Laboratories was founded in 1933, focusing on direct marketing of prescription drugs to hospitals, pharmacies and doctors. Co-Founder Robert L. Mc Neil Jr. was instrumental in the development of acetaminophen, and in 1955, Mc Neil Laboratories introduced Tylenol for children, containing only acetaminophen. In 1959 Johnson & Johnson acquired Mc Neil Laboratories and began selling Tylenol for the first time ever without a prescription. Today, Mc Neil Laboratories offers a full line of products for headache relief, arthritis, sinus & allergy, cold & flu, pain and sleeplessness, and children's health care.
The package contains 24 caplets with 12 individual doses of 2 caplets. The directions indicate that adults and children over 12 should swallow whole 2 caplets every 4 hours, but no more than 12 caplets in a 24 hour period. This product is not recommended for children under 12 years of age. The caplets are covered with a slight citrus flavored coating that eliminates the metallic taste found in some over-the-counter medications.
Each caplet contains the standard active ingredients for multi-symptom cold and sinus relief; Acetaminophen pain reliever and fever reducer (325 mg), Dextromethorphan HBr (10 mg) cough suppressant, Guaifenesin expectorant, (200mg) and Phenylephrine HCL (5 mg) nasal decongestant, as well as, 3 mg sodium.
Inactive Ingredients include: Carnauba wax, croscarmellose sodium, D & C Yellow #10, Flavor, hydorxypropyl cellulose, hypromellose, iron oxide, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, pregelatinized Starch, shellac, sucralose, and titanium dioxide
Within about a half hour of taking my first dose of Tylenol Cold Multi-Symptom Cold Severe Daytime Non-Drowsy caplets, I noticed that my sinus and sore throat pain was lessened to a significant degree. After about the 3rd or 4th dose, I noticed some improvement in my nasal congestion. Gradually over a course of taking the product for about 2-3 days, I was finally able blow my nose, and begin feeling some relief from the build-up mucous in my nasal passages.
Once I began to experience significant relief, I started skipping one dose a day, and continued to take medication for about six or seven days. After the 7th day, the majority of my symptoms had disappeared.
Over the years, I have tried a variety of over-the-counter cold and flu and sinus and allergy medications. I found Tylenol Cold Multi-Symptom Severe Daytime Non-Drowsy caplets to be among the best at providing temporary relief of cold and sinus symptoms. The non-drowsy formula allowed me to continue working during my recovery, and I found the citrus flavored coating, which eliminats the metallic taste, to make taking this product much more pleasant.
Although there are plenty of cheaper over-the-counter multi-symptom cold and flu and sinus medications on the market, all of which contain the same four main ingredients, Tylenol is a name brand I trust and delivers consistent results. The price is about average for a name brand at $5.50 for 24 caplets. This product delivers fast, temporary relief from all the primary symptoms of cold and sinus infection; in short Tylenol does it all.
