Pros: Cute bear, collector's piece
Cons: Hard to find, very limited.
Stuffed animals are fun to have around as they can decorate a room or brighten mood while being an item that can be stored on a shelf. I prefer to have Ty Beanie Babies as they are small and don't take up too much space as our home is not very big. A few years back, we found a Beanie Baby at a garage sale that I found to be cute and thought my daughter would like it. It appeared to be in very nice shape and bought it for a quarter. Since my daughter is number one in my book, I thought it was very sweet. The item I bought was the Ty Beanie Baby, #1 Bear.
We later found out that this particular one is special and were never available to the public. The #1 Bear was offered only to Sales Reps that worked for Ty and only 253 were made. It is supposed to be the most valuable Beanie of all time. Needless to say, this stuffed animal is now kept out of reach from my daughter. I am neither a collector nor do I have a desire to be but it is nice to have a specialty item. It does not appear as though I would receive much if I decided to sell it, so we keep it around. It is in good shape but not great so that would likely have an effect on its value as well. There was no tag at the time I found it and I am not sure if they had one when they were given out. Just goes to show you, you never know what you will find at a garage sale. Of course, I would have preferred to have found a diamond ring!
Ty Beanie Baby, #1 Bear is about 6 inches tall when she is standing up but about 4 inches when in a sitting position. The design of the bear puts her into a sitting position but can be held into a standing position. She has been colored in a bright read. On the left side of the chest, a white #1 has been sewn into the fabric, hence the name #1 Bear. Limited detail in the face gives a classic teddy bear appearance. She has a black nose and eyes which have been sewn tightly into the fabric. Her hair is short and will be hard to remove strands if they are pulled on. The hair is short enough that it would be difficult to get a good grasp in the first place.
Beads are one of the trademark items of a Beanie Baby and allow them to sit in their intended position. These beads create additional weight making her sit in an upright position. Enough stuffing has been added that Ty Beanie Baby, #1 Bear is able to sit upright. The beads are well secured inside the bear and it would take significant effort to get them out. My daughter and I have had a number of these Beanie Babies and I have never seen one rip or had the beads come out. This stuffed animal is surface wash only and will ruin if placed in the washer and dryer. Typically a warm towel or baby wipe will do the trick if a cleaning is needed. I find that a baby wipe works the best as it not only removes spots (most of them anyway) but it gives them a nice fresh scent.
The bright coloring of Ty Beanie Baby, #1 Bear has held up nicely over the years and I have not seen any significant fading. I would anticipate if the bear was exposed to sunlight over a long period of time, the color would eventually fade. She has been chewed on, thrown across the room, cuddled and slept with and had one fall from our 2nd story patio and had held up nicely. All of the stitching remains firmly intact. Of course, the bear is now kept on a high shelf.
