After years and years of using only cheap hand-me-down cookware I decided to buy a matching set of pots and pans for my new apartment. I made the mistake of buying from Fingerhut. The pans were very cute and color coordinated with the other garbage I bought from them. After one or two uses, the rusting started and within a few months, the pots and pans were not fit to use and had to be tossed out.
In frustration I decided to get some advice and buy a real quality set of cookware, even if it cost hundreds of dollars. Someone recommended T-fal and I was pleased to find that this nice-sized set of pots, pans, lids and handles cost less than $150. I had never heard of removable handles but I love them! It makes the pans fit nicely into the dishwasher and makes them stack neatly in the cabinet. The lids are cool too, great for steaming and straining.
The pans are black. Not exciting, but stylish. They are sort of futuristic looking. There are 9 pans with two lids each and 5 handles. The handles grip on to the sides of the pans and can be removed for cleaning. The covers come with handles too, which are attached with a screw. This is kind of a pain, having to assemble the handles to the lids, but not too much of a problem. I have not had anything stick to these pans yet. I have had them for about six months and not a sign of wear and tear or rust. I use all kinds of utensils in them, including metal occasionally.
I use the skillet and the larger (deeper) pan the most, for stove-top meals like Chicken Helper and Spaghetti. They are as easy to clean as any other dishes. It's nice to be able to fit them all into the dishwasher because you don't have the handles to make room for.
The second set of lids that come with these pans are the plastic snap-on type so that you could set the pan directly in the fridge, sealed, to store food. I don't do this because it still just seems unsanitary to me to store the food in the same container it was cooked in, plus I can usually conserve more space in the fridge by putting the food in a Tupperware container or something.
I finally feel like I own quality cookware that's going to last and looks great too.
