Oh, the age of the infomercial! Yes, I too have been caught gaping at the TV, wondering how I ever lived without whatever product they are hawking now. This is how I came upon T-Fal's Ingenio line of cookware. The endless array of options was new and exciting, and I told my mother that this was what I wanted as my bridal shower gift.
Yes, they were expensive. But with all those options, it was worth it, right? Well, do you really need pans with removable handles? That is really all that is unique about these pans, and I really don't even like that feature.
What I noticed right away was that there are six pans and only three lids. So, if you are making a large meal, you have to juggle lids. Also, the lids are all vented and perforated, so making anything that needs to be completely covered is impossible with these pans. Along with that, the lids are never really securely fashioned to the pan, so be cautious whenever straining.
There are also only three handles, so again, when making a big meal, you will have to juggle handles. The point of having the removable handles is that the pans are able to go directly from the range top to the oven, which I am not sure is a unique feature.
On the infomercial, you are shown an egg gliding effortlessly from an Ingenio pan onto an awaiting plate, without having cooked the egg with sprays or oils. I assure you, this does not happen. Ingenio is supposed to be non-stick, however I have found that you sstill need cooking spray for the pans to truly be non-stick. Even more distressing, a year after we received the pans, the non-stick coating began to flake off into the food I was preparing.
The time is approaching when I will need to go out and find a new cookware system. I will not be swayed by infomercials, or special features. I recommend going with old fashioned stainless steel, which I am sure has a much better life span, and all the appropriate lids.
