| Javina's Full Review: Taco del Mar |
This little west coast restaurant chain offers unique and tasty Californian/Mexican healthy fast food. Burritos and soft tacos are their mainstay, and obviously a recipe for success, with locations dotting the coast.
Walk in and you'll be greeted by hip music and employees who are permitted to display their individuality, i.e. tattoos and piercings, along with their aprons. This makes for happier, more dedicated staff, as far as I can see - my every visit has been attended to with efficiency and friendliness.
Taco Del Mar (del mar = of the sea, www.tacodelmar.com) offers a speciality deserving of many repeat visits - fish burritos and fish tacos. Order one and you'll be asked for your choice of spinach, tomato, whole wheat or plain tortilla shells, steamed on the spot. Layers of beans, cheese, guacamole and sour cream nestle breaded pieces of cod. Topped with shredded cabbage, white sauce and your choice of hot sauces and peppers, they wrap up this mega-meal in tin foil then exchange it for about five bucks.
A quirk which I appreciate is proffering your food without a paper bag - it's your choice to pick one up and place your burritos and tacos inside, which makes you think about the environmental impact of every fast food bag you've ever tossed away. Do you really need one for a burrito which is already well-wrapped in foil? I doubt it.
Peel back the foil as you eat, exposing layer after luscious layer of tempting, spicy (as hot as you want it) and nutritious food. Unless you've got an appetite as big as the sea it's unlikely you'll be able to finish a Super sized burrito, and even the Jumbo size is too much for me most times.
Vegetarian and vegan friendly, but they also sell wicked soft pork burritos (so I'm told) and beef items, Taco Del Mar offers everything you need for a quick, inexpensive and filling meal - and they appear to be a good corporate citizen besides.
Recommended for singles on a budget, families seeking a healthy takeout alternative, and tourists looking for an inexpensive, indigenous West Coast meal.
