mjtriplett's Full Review: Take and Toss Toddler Spoon and Fork 12 Pack
When we started giving Kid utensils, I found it frustrating that so many of the options available to purchase were packs containing a single set of utensils. First, he had absolutely no need for a knife and still doesn't. Second, between $3-5 for a 3-pack of utensils, 2 of which will actually be used, is ridiculous. So when I saw this 12 pack of Take & Toss spoons and forks (6 each) at Target for less than $3, I happily tossed it in to my cart.
The idea behind Take & Toss products, made by The First Years, is that they are cheap enough that you won't bat an eyelash if they accidentally get lost or thrown out. But, they are also plenty durable to be saved and used over and over again.
These utensils come in assorted colors, all of which are transparent, including orange, green, yellow, blue, purple and red. They are made of sturdy plastic and about 4" long or so; enough to reach nicely into containers but not to allow new users to damage their tonsils. The tines on the forks are curved and easily bendable for toddler safety purposes (recommended age is 9 months and up). The spoons have wide and semi-deep bowls.
I heartily attest to the fact that these can be used over and over again. I bought our first pack at least 9 or 10 months ago and we're still using them. They are dishwasher-safe, and ours have survived countless washings without breaking, cracking, bending or even looking worn (using the heat dry cycle, too).
I have no complaints about the Take & Toss spoons. They are deep enough to spoon liquids and wide enough to have decent-sized bites. This is especially important when half of the spoonful has fallen off by the time Kid gets it to his mouth. But the forks are not the most useful utensil with which to learn. The plastic rounded tines require a combination of force and precision that Kid has not yet mastered to pick up a lot of tougher foods. And they're worthless on slippery foods, like noodles. He still gives it his all, bless his heart, and is getting better at it, but sometimes we have to switch over to metal forks to ease his frustration.
What I especially don't like about these is that they are marketed to be "tossed." Not even recycled, but tossed. Sure, they are cheap enough to do so, but why? They hold up as well, if not better, than all the other utensils we've tried thus far. Sure, we have forgotten a few in unknown places when we've used them away from home, but I've never knowingly tossed any of them. It's just too wasteful.
