| rmgood's Full Review: Talking Cell Phone |
Playskool has a wonderful knack for irritating parents until their hair turns gray and, at the exact same time, amuse children for hours on end. At that is the best way I can describe their new and improved Talking Cell Phone (with the ever-famous "Ring Back" feature).
The picture displayed on the epinions product page is the older style of this phone. The new style is (in my humble opinion) much better designed for kids. It is now grey (just like mom's phone) with an orange antenna, aqua speaker, yellow buttons and a purple flip-down mouthpiece. The body is slightly thicker and has orange grippers on each side of the phone to make it easier for little hands to hold on to. On the back side of the phone it a belt clip so your child can hook it onto their pants or bag. The entire phone is now designed for better durability, including the antenna and mouthpiece which are much less flimsy than the previous model.
So what is it??? Well, its a talking cell phone (hence, the product name)! The number pad is set up just like an actual phone with numbers 0 through 9 plus a * key and a # key. Push any of the 12 buttons and the phone will ring twice before a "charming" (insert sarcasim here) girl answers. "Hi, its me..." After here little saying which is about a sentence long, she hangs up. But that's not all, oh no, that's not all! A few seconds later she calls you back. "Hi, its me again..." Push another button and you can start all over again! (Don't worry, she only calls you back once each time you press a button!)
There are nine phrases in all and the voice is always the same "happy" (insert more sarcasim) little girl. Although there is no volume control, the set volume is just about perfect -not too loud but a good volume to capture a child's attention.) And there is no off switch, however the phone won't make any noise unless you push one of the buttons first. It uses 2 AA batteries (which come already in the phone) and you will need a Phillips screwdriver to replace them. They are stored securely in the compartment so curious little hands can't pry them out.
As a parent, this phone drives me crazy! The bubbly little voice really gets on your nerves after a few minutes. However, my daughter loves this phone! She can't get enough of it! The purpose of buying this phone was to distract her so I could speak on the real phone for a few minutes without her grabbing it and dialing China. In this regards, Playskool's Talking Cell Phone has served its purpose very well. She thinks her phone is the same as mine, and in the end what more could I hope for in a toddler toy?! So until it starts getting on my daughter's nerves as much as it gets on mine, I'd have to say I would indeed recommend it for others. (It especially makes a nice present for someone ELSE's child! LOL! Great revenge on Aunt Lora for buying that talking chicken last year!)
