For a few months I was convinced that I was done with having my period. After my amputation and all the ills that followed I was certain that skipping my period for four months straight was an indication that I was suffering from extremely early menopause. Obviously I was wrong in my assumption. I grabbed a couple of boxes of tampons when they were on clearance at the grocery store and of course I had coupons for them so it made it an even better deal. I like to have spare tampons around in case I lose track of my normal brand. I got the Tampax Compak Regular Absorbency for $2.15 a box but had a .50 cent off coupon so each box was $1.15 [they double coupons up to .99 cents]. I'll try anything for that price and even though regular tampons have never been effective for me, I couldn't pass up the price.
I had tried other absorbencies of Tampax Compak Tampons in the past and found that they were good but the idea of having to assemble a tampon never sat well with me. I am a heavy bleeder so the applicator-free tampons like OB always resulted in me walking out of a stall of a public restroom looking like I'd just killed a small animal. Graphic depiction yes but they are something that I just can't use. The premise of the Tampax Compak is simple; instead of having a full sized tampon in a wrapper or sleeve it is half sized so it is a bit more discrete. Well, that is the idea of it. How discrete can you be when you are swearing up a storm in a public bathroom trying to get the plunger to work correctly? I would rather have a full sized tampon that is easy to insert than something that can be hidden in a pocket or the palm of your hand. I do have to admit that these are small and portable and they would be great for people who are not heavy bleeders but that isn't me.
As you might imagine, the box of the Compak tampons is small so you can buy them without having everyone know your business but at this stage in the game I could care less who sees me buying them. The regular absorbency tampons in the Compak family have an attractive yellow and white wrapper to them so they sort of look like long pieces of candy. That in and of itself proved interesting when one of my male friends asked me if I had any mints; I said yes and that they were in the middle pocket of my backpack. As if time went in to slow motion mode, I saw him pull out one of these tampons and casually start to unwrap it while he was talking to me. I didn't have the mental grasp to say anything, I just watched him fumble with the wrapper while he was telling me about his dinner the night before. When he finally realized what it was that he had in his hands he froze. He was Superman and the Tampax Compak Tampon was his kryptonite. I think he spent ten minutes washing his hands and making me swear on my prosthetic that I would never tell anyone about the ordeal. I only mention it as a warning that these can easily be confused with other things, even more so if you carry a backpack and are prepared for all sorts of emergencies.
I rarely wear regular absorbency tampons; I bleed too much to make it even worth my while to insert one as it will need changed in less than ten minutes. Yes, I bleed that much. I used these at the end of my period when my bleeding was almost over. They were more comfortable than wearing a super or super plus so that was a big perk. Since I got these on sale it was a good deal all around – inexpensive in price and it also meant that I wasn't wasting one of the super or super plus ones when I went to the bathroom. They insert the same was as the Kotex Security tampons but you do have to fiddle around with the plunger to get it to work the correct way. If you have never used these before there is a diagram on the side of the box but that is in Spanish so check the side flaps of the box to see which end you should open. That is where the leaflet is located that gives you the directions on how to click the plunger in to place and information about the Toxic Shock Syndrome that has been associated with tampon use.
Kotex Security is my brand of choice; they are inexpensive and work great for me. I would suggest the Tampax Compak Regular Absorbency for those who do not bleed a lot and want something that is small and discrete. They are a step up from applicator-free tampons and a step down from the full sized tampons. Consider them the middle child in the evolution of tampons. Once you get the hang of how the plunger is assembled and how it works they are easy to use but don't get discouraged if you screw a couple of them up. Do not do the usual "I can figure this out" routine with these. You will get frustrated when you can't figure it out and let's face it, having your period is stressful enough without having to fight with your tampon.
