I received a rather disturbing email from someone that I offended with a previous tampon review. The person, who shall remain nameless, said, I am shocked and offended that you would write about something so private as well as saying that I had no morals to speak of and my personal favorite, I find it completely tasteless that you would write about such a thing without giving an advanced warning. OK, there is a picture of the box, the title of the product as well as the name of the product in the review. How much of an advanced warning do you need?

There, happy now?
A few weeks ago there was a coupon in the newspaper; buy a 36 count or larger box of Tampax tampons and get an 18 or 20 count box for free. I waiting until my grocery store had them on sale and started stocking up on them. Sadly, after I used the first six coupons they ran out of the regular Super Plus tampons with the cardboard applicators so I was stuck getting the Pearl ones. It wouldnt have been that bad if they didnt have the Fresh Scent added to them. Normally I am pretty picky about what I put in my body [get your minds out of the gutter] and I stay any from any type of scented feminine product but these were free so I figured what the hell. I used three of them and gave up; they are absorbent and they work well but the smell is something that I just cant deal with. When I went to the mall I felt like everyone was looking at me thinking, Hey lady, I know that smell - you have your period and you are wearing one of those fancy tampons. I know, that is an insane thought but if youve never smelled these things - you just dont understand how overpowering it is.
Tampax Pearl Tampons With Plastic Applicator
Super Plus Absorbency, Fresh Scent
I picked up the 18 count box and damn, I am glad that I didnt buy the mondo sized one. Well, actually I didnt buy them, I got them free with another Tampax purchase. When I see a good deal on tampons I stock up - unless my ovaries and other female parts pack up and leave sometime soon eventually Ill go through all of them so stocking up is part necessity and part compulsive shopping. The Tampax name is one that I trust and even though I bounce around between this brand and Kotex Security, eventually these go on sale and I buy as many as I can. One of the perks of these is that they have a strong, sturdy plastic overwrap to them so you can toss them in your purse or backpack and they hold up a little better than the ones that have the paper wrapper. They should really think about double wrapping them so you cant pick up on the smell. Yes, its that strong.
The plastic applicator is already assembled so this isnt something that you are going to be able to hide if you have to run to the bathroom without your purse or backpack. The wrappers are a light blue so they arent as obvious as the straight white ones but hey, its still a tampon. If you dont rip the wrapped the right way you might have some trouble getting it off but its not an impossible task. The applicator is a little smaller than I expected but there is a deep ridge at the back of it so working with it isnt difficult. Some tampons have these small textured ribs on them and if your hands are the least bit wet you cant get a grip on them. These work well for the heaviest of flows however they are a little shorter and smaller than the regular Super Plus tampons. The cord is the same length as the others but its not a regular cord - it sort of looks like braided thread. Now ladies, have you ever had that fear of a cord breaking when the tampon is inside of you? Thats exactly what went through my head when I saw this one.
This does expand a lot once it starts to absorb the fluid so please, use the correct size tampon for your needs. If you use a Super Plus and you are only bleeding lightly it can be a little uncomfortable to remove it. After you use this you will have that Fresh Scent on your hands so make sure you wash them well or you will be smelling it all day long [and besides that, you should wash your hands after using the bathroom]. These are available in several different sizes:
Junior - 6 grams
Regular - 6 - 9 grams
Super - 9 - 12 grams
Super Plus - 12 - 15 grams
Tampax states that you should use the lowest absorbency that meets your needs to minimize the possibility of Toxic Shock Syndrome [TSS]. You can read more about this in the leaflet that is packaged inside the box. For first time users there are also instructions on how to use these. Since these have a plastic applicator you can not flush them unless you want to make some plumber very happy. Just to please everyone the package and inner contents are printed in English, French and Spanish. Heres a shock, they are made in the U.S.A. - something you just do see all that often anymore!
Price
The 18 count box range up for $4.29 when it was on sale with the normal price being $4.99. These are a little more expensive than the regular tampons from Tampax but are they worth it? It all depends on how much you bleed, if you need the Super Plus size, if you like the scent and if you prefer plastic over cardboard. I had the coupon to receive a free box and I guess everyone else did too so after I used the first few there were no more cardboard ones left. I honestly dont think that I will buy these again because the smell really annoys me to no end. It seems like a shame to throw them out because I only used a couple of them so I guess Ill either turf them off on someone who likes them or keep them around for an emergency.
The Bottom Line
If Tampax made these without the scent then Id probably buy them or get them if they had another buy one get one free coupon. They do work well to prevent accidents and they expand outward so that makes up for the smaller length. I didnt have any problems when I used them but I could easily see how someone with allergies or sensitive parts could get irritated from the scent. So far I havent seen these without a scent to them so I am hoping that someone at Tampax reads this and either adjusts the scent or make them in a scent free fashion. I like the overwrap and that it keeps them clean but good lord, that smell is enough to gag a maggot. As always, thanks for the read!
